I replaced the stock seat on my '02 adventure - I went with Sargent and couldn't be happier. I'm thinking of selling the old stock seat - it's taking up room, and cash is nice.
. . .but in the back of my mind I wonder if I'd be making a mistake by letting go of the original equipment. I don't plan on selling the bike any time soon but I wonder if getting rid of the seat would decrease the value of the bike for any reason.
Any thoughts?

When I sell a bike, I put as much of the original stuff back on as possible and sell the aftermarket things on ebay. You really don't get much extra for a motorcycle with a custom seat, aftermarket windshield, saddle bag liners, etc. so IMHO it's better to sell aftermarket items separately. Original seats, exhaust systems and so forth don't seem to command very high prices in my experience (except, of course, vintage stuff).
I am certain that you will receive a number of well thought out logical responses to your question. Here is my fuzzy one.
When riding I have learned to listen to my inner voice when it says pull over for no apparent reason. Listening has turned me into a first responder instead of a participant in a number of accidents.
Perhaps you have some reason that you want to keep the seat. If you have the space and don’t need the money why not listen to the voice. If either one of you changes your mind you can sell it at some latter time.

Keep the seat!!!
A) If you are an off-road rider, then put it on for those days. Better to tear up that than tear up your custom seat.
B) Resale as said above.
C) You may need it someday
I wish I had an extra pan when I got my seat made and had two. The custom (BMS) seat is great for the road, but sucks off-road (too wide) even though I had those measurements taken into consideration.
Does anyone know it the GS Adv seat fits a GS (same year)??? I'll buy it from you!!!

Keep the seat. I still have my stock seat and will hold onto it... you never know what you may need it for later on. You can have it re-worked locally and when done you can sell your Sargent seat. I experienced a very poor Sargent seat in the past, were the foam became as hard as a rock. Hold on to your seat.... :)

Thanks for the great insights! Really, everything from 1) the resell w/ orig seat and sell the new seat separately to 2) the keep it as a spare seat/pan to 3) the "trust your feelings luke" perspectives are all compelling. I'll hang on to the seat!
Also, Doc asks if the GS Adv seat fits a GS. I don't think so. I've owned both ('01 1150 GS and '02 1150 GS Adv) - and the GS seat is a two-piecer, each with their own locking devices (also, the bike has two different sets of mounts to attach the front portion to, allowing two height settings). The Adv seat is one piece (so fewer fittings/locking devices on the seat & on the bike) - and there is only one height setting on the Adv (so only one mount on the bike).

Always keep the stock stuff. When you sell the bike, put all the stock stuff back on and sell the accesories separately. Same with shocks, windshields, tank bags and mounts for gear.
You don't get much when they go with the bike, but you typically get about half the original value when you sell the alone.
