I am not the most mechanicaly inclined.... so I thought I would ask the deeler about doing the 12K mile service on my 2005RT. They told me it would run about $340 and it would take around 4 hours.

Does that sound right???? :dunno

Thanks in advance for any info.

Glycerine suppositories are supposed to make those dealer visits easier.

Do you have any other dealers in the area that you could cross-check the price with?

That's not too bad 12,000 is considered a major if you do it yourself you're not paying the 65-90 dollars an hour that the shop charges.Just like with cars you're always hosed when you go to a dealer

Its not so much that I am not mechanically inclined as much as it is i have just never done any of that before. Plus I am getting ready to go on a big trip. sooo, I gues I should get it done and get it done right.

Or so you hope :stick . The last time I went to my dealer, the wrench (fired BTW) had 'adjusted' my valves in such way that they would have burned up if I had not checked them myself after-wards. This was in case of the 600 mile service which, for warranty purposes is sorta mandatory :rolleyes .
Your quoted price sounds rather high and if possible check around if you can. If you must pay, well than pay up and and for the future see if you can attend some tech days in you 'hood.
It pays to know this kind of stuff anyway as when you ride a bike IMHO you ought to be able to service the thing when away from home.
This is not meant as a personal attack in any way, so don't feel offended :D

Tech days are a wonderful way of making new friends and learning all about your bike. I have the feeling that the collective knowledge of most riders will put many a professional to shame. :D :D

Don't worry, you will have to better than that to insult me!!

Yeah, I want to learn how to do all this stuff but I don't have the time or tools to learn it before my big trip. I currently live in the middle of no where Arkansas and have to drive 3 hours to Little Rock BMW (they said around $340) and 3 hours to Shreaveport LA (they are suppose to call me back with a price)

I am in the process of moving to the San Francisco area, so I am sure I will have more chances to learn a few things. Especially since I don't think work will be quite so crazy.

Eric,

Sounds like you should just spring for the $350 and be done with it; your trip will be more enjoyable with the peace of mind.

You couldn't be less mechanically inclined than I am. I have a couple of buddies who have walked me through my services (6k, 12k, 18k, 24, & 30k). They're really no big deal, once you see how it's done and know what you need to do.

This forum or a local club (or as has been suggested, tech days) should put you in touch with a mentor or two that might be willing to show you around the bike.

Good luck and have a great trip.

I paid the same for my 12K when I was in Boston a in July. My local rapist, err, I mean dealer in Long Beach, CA just charged me $455 for the 18K, which is supposed to be a minor service.

The 12k on my 04RT was 352 last summer, so that sounds about right. My 24k this summer was 420 which included an inspection sticker.

With all the ECUs on-board and very slow interfaces to them - it's time for BMW-NA to start free maintenance program on motorcycles and CPO program.
Otherwise I'm buying next brand new BMW from URAL.

BMW has free maintanance on their cages, so your idea isn't that bad.
I wish BMWNA would look into that, rather than pi$$ing :bottle away their dealer net.
