I'm strongly considering buying a '94 r100r. 23k miles. Anyone own or owned one? Love it? Hate it? Must-Have accessories/modifications? Strengths/weaknesses? Any input appreciated.
Thanks

I have a '95. LOVE IT! There aren't any real blatant weaknesses I can think of except that the stock seat really sucks. The R also doesn't have the CV-joint problems that the R100GS of similar vintage had because the R has less ground clearance so the joints never flex much. The brakes and handling are great, and really I think the R is sort of the best of all worlds the way it mixes up technology from different generations of BMW design. It's the pinnacle of airhead design in which they finally got so many things so right, just before killing off the line LOL!

I have a 95 as well and I like very much indeed. Mine is a sidecar hack so I can't give much practical advice for single use. However this site has some interesting mods:

Squint before hitting the link as the paint is pretty garish. Effective anti-theft device I would say.
I have fitted the Euro light switch (easy), the lighter return carb return springs (easy and bloody marvelous), the omega alt (a bit more at idle would be nice but still much better than stock), etc.
I also fitted a turn signal cancel unit from Kisan:

Much easier to cancel signals and the extra running lights at night are nice.
My only advice with bike purchase is to buy a Canadian one as they came with 40 mm carbs.

And I am also doing the R80G/S Paris Dakar tank conversion. Contrary to what Zebra man says the tank is still available though it now clocks in around $900+.

Well the bike was in beautiful condition, runs like a champ, and the seller gave me a nice price. The windjammer and pollution control stuff is in the process of being removed, and it will be insured, registered, and plated by lunchtime today!

Beautiful and Congrats!!!
I had a 93 R100R that I wish that I never sold. Good idea to remove that "ugly" fairing and the emissions removal. Take your time and go through the bike. Remember that the bike is 12 years old, so keep an eye on the rubber parts, sometimes time will take it's toll....
I can strongly suggest to join the "Airhead" organization. Great information is given their.
Enjoy!! :dance :eat :drink

The picture looks like a Vetter fairing to me.

I called the guy that was selling this bike, and I almost went to look at it on Saturday. I decided that I didn't need another bike at this time (busy with kids, work, grad school, two bands I play in, etc.).
Anyway, the seller sent me more pictures, and in one closeup you could read the word Windjammer on the fairing.
I'm glad another MOA member - and musician (BeemoKat) got the bike. I'll keep my eye out for a Mystic..... :thumb

Your bike looks like a real find. I own an 82 RS and just love it. There is however no argument that the 90s airhead boxers benefit from a lot of improvements.
On the IBMWRA Marketplace I saw this for sale. http://members.aol.com/drjerry/mystic/mystic
Insted of the Vetter Windjammer this owner mounted the classic RS fairing on the 95 mystic. It looks like a first class job. It has the classic lines of the 80s boxers with all the chassis & brake improvements. I have to admit my heart beat a little faster.

Nothing wrong with a Vetter or a Luftmeister. Beauty is in eye's of the beholder. I just don't care for them. My airhead started out as an RT, changed to a R, then an S, now it is in the process of being changed to an RS. That is what I find so great about this bike... You can change the looks very simply. On my 93 Airhead I had a windshield, so I guess as I changed, the looks of the bike has changed as well. To each his own...
My suggestions is to take the fairing off first and to ride it as an R first, then figure out how much wind protection you want and then hunt the fairing/windshield combination....

If you like these things, I know where one can be had for the time & gas it'll take to come & get it. Meanwhile, back at the ranch...I've ridden this bike 3 times now, once with the fairing getting it home from Rochester and twice without. Without is better, for me, much better! These fairings are too heavy for the brackets that they sit on and bounce when you ride over rough pavement, and I don't like the helmet buffeting from windshields that are too tall or too short (this one was too tall, I had to look through it rather than over it). Now that I have "unsold" (is that a word?) it thoroughly, if there are any of you who would still like to have this, come get it.

I have a '93 that I bought new. 190K. No problems. Never leaked a drop of oil. Also the Rs don't have the driveshaft problem that plagued the GS.
