View Full Version : Lost timing cover plug

Been doing the valve adjusts on my '02 RT for the last 50k+ miles and never a problem... until today. Should have replaced the rubber plug, it was pretty worn, but being in a hurry I didn't. I always use an awl punched thru the center to hold it in place, but this time it didn't help. The result, it fell into the fly wheel cover. Dumb, dumb....
Rather than a teardown, I'm going to just replace it. Seems to me that if gravity and centrifugal force do their jobs, it won't interfere with any of the important work that goes on in there. Any thoughts from the experts?

Won't be a problem. You will have to explain yourself when the trans comes back for a spline lube though. :laugh

I've got at least TWO timing hole plug covers down in the bowels of my R1150R somewhere. I'm not worried about it. Maybe someday the bike will get torn down for something or other, and they'll be found. Until then, I've found that replacing it with an older Airhead plug - mine is from an 80's-era R80 something - works pretty well. It's larger on the outside, is made of some pretty stout rubber, and is much less likely to get pushed down in there. Care should still be taken when pushing it in, though (as with a lot of things in life...!).

I got two plugs down in my engine/tranny area too. :bluduh :bluduh
Oh well, having a spare or two doesn't hurt. :stick I decided to use electrical tape and so far so good.
