I replaced my noisy starter with a used one, and the original lays on my garage floor. Are these things worth messing with, or are they throwaway items? It has that sound of a solenoid that fails to immediately disengage when the engine starts.

Fred:
I'd get a quote to rebuild it, and if it's not too high, get it rebuilt and keep it as a spare. It may be a Bosch starter, and they are good units, according to my auto-electric builder.

I am pretty sure that it is a Valeo unit. I don't think BMW has used Bosch starters for many years now.

That is correct. It is edging closer to the trash as I remodel the house and empty the garage. My pack-rat days are coming to an end, but I'll keep the core if it makes financial sense.

that might be a good place for it. you might get 20 dollars for it if you send it to a place that rebuilds it, but rebuilding the valeos yourself isn't worth it, i wanted to attempt it
