View Full Version : tank bag for r12rt
I've never owned a tank bag and am looking for options for the rt. I have seen the bags on touratech, RK, etc. and am now simply confuzzed. Anyone out there want to help?
It needs a map case and a place to carry a water bottle. I'm not sold yet on the bigger bags. Don't think I need more than 7L of space. :dunno

I have a BMW tank bag for my GS. Its not too big and carries all the things I like to keep handy. I've ridden in pouring rain, etc. and never had to use the rain cover. Only draw back is how it attaches to the tank and what you have to go through to fill up w/ gas. I really like some of the newer models that use magnets or a device that allows you to flip the bag up to access the fuel tank.

The thing that I like on my RKA tank bag is a small exterior pocket for keeping toll money and stuff like that. I also have a Big Mak and I like that cause of how easy it is to fill up.

dmr:
There are a number of high quality tank bags available, and they all have particular features that appeal to different riders. I have had three different kinds of bags on my bikes, but if I had it to do over again, I would bite the bullet and get the BMW one; it has the most elegant mounting system. If that's beyond your budget, I would recommend a Wunderlich. Tank bags are a bit of a nuisance for fueling, and if I could hack having an AWACS pod on my bike, I wouldn't even use one.
Once you get your bag, I would suggest having fastex buckles sewn in the front strap on both sides, so that you can quickly disconnect it for fueling.
My other suggestion is to put any water vulnerable stuff in water proof pouches so that you don't have to use the rain cover. They're a nuisance as well. The newer BMW bag for the ST has the rain cover inside, which is the best solution. But I don't think that model is available for the earlier boxers.

I appreciate the suggestions. Thanks. I really think $300 is a bit much for something I would rarely use, but the mounting system is very nice on the BMW bag. I haven't seen the Wunderlich bags yet. Like many other things, I should invent my own and start my own business so I can work 80 hour weeks.
The search goes on...

Which RT? If it's the R1200RT, there is only one tank bag on the market that fits its grid.

I know of two. The BMW and the Tourtech one. Neither one is cheap.

I have the BMW on mine. I wish they made it to flip up like the Big Mak ones.

Yes, it's the 1200. I've seen three bags made specifically for the bike- the bmw bag, and two from Touratech. The bigger one is more expensive than BMW, while the other may not have a map pocket on top. The picture doesn't show one and the description doesn't say.

While at the Colorado Beemers Rally (good rally) a dealer was selling Chicane motorcycle bags. Had I not just bought a Marsee (mistake: tell ya later) I would have bought the Canyon EX. I think it has all the features necessary for most trips. [URL=http://www.webbikeworld.com] has them and others with a review of the Chicane Canyon.
As for my Marsee, it is fading to a ugly purple after only four months. It the small version with the hard side and no exterior pockets. IMHO all tank bags should have exterior pockets, :violin who said an old dog can't learn new tricks.
Good luck, check out the Chicane, there are sooooooo many choices, it just make ya :sick

The factory one is pretty fine. The way it just flips up and off is beautiful.

I'm thinking about getting one of those rear seat storage pods that straps on the back seat, to replace the tank bag. National Cycle has them for $129.95, so it's a small gamble. They're only 6 inches high, but I don't carry a lot of stuff, so I don't need a lot of volume.
I'll do anything to clear access to the tank.

When I bought my R1200RT, I bought the BMW tank bag a little reluctantly. I thought it was a little large for my purposes.
Now, having lived with it for over a year, I like it just fine. It is handy and clicks on and off easily. It has a nice waterproofing arrangement.
I would not buy any tank bag for this bike that does not use the grid.
I recommend the BMW tank bag for any R1200RT owner.

BMW makes tankbags for BMWs.
Others are poor seconds.
I agree, a BMW bag would be great. But I don't want a 28 liter bag. I JUST WANT MY JUNIOR MINTS... I mean, I just want a small bag. If BMW had a small bag on the mounting, that would be great.

No map pocket or anything but I have the tourtech bag that fits between the handlebars right above the ignition and I am thrilled with it. Perfect for wallet and other small stuff.

Sort of on the same topic. . . . I have the BMW tank bag made for my 04 which is a good bag though only a slight pain to unhook at the gas pump. I have not been able to figure out the rain cover. If you slip it on over the bag, once you reach speed, it puffs up to almost reaching my chin. There are no slots for the front straps so air gets in under it. I now use these super small bungee cords to hold the rain cover on. I'd love to know if I'm missing something here.
One thing for sure, BMW makes great bags. They're pricey, but they work great with good features. I thought for sure they'd be the only player on the 1200RT having that rail system.

Randy:
The rain cover billowing is a common problem with different makes of bag, and is the reason I have quit using the one on my Marsee. I have seen the spaghetti bungey fix mentioned in threads in the Bikers, Oracle RS forum. I wasn't aware that the BMW covers also billow. I guess the manufacturers have to make the covers big enough for the bag's size at full expansion.

Coming from Harleyworld where tank bags sort of don't fit, I decided to start small with the Touratech Flat Bag. Works out just fine for the few things I want to carry up front. Good quality, good fit. 2 twists and it flips over backwards for fueling.

I have just purchased one of the BMW tank bags for my 1200RT and its great. the mounting system is secure and it has loads of expandable room to holder whatever you would like...it doesn't impair vision of the screen either...I'm very pleased :)
