Where there's smoke, there's ...?

On my way down a rainy road recently near Burlington, VT, my R80/7 broke down. The bike just stopped running, and smoke rose from the front of the motor for about 10 seconds before clearing. The bike and I have arrived at home since then, and I wonder what has gone wrong. I have some ideas, but I wish you all would lend me your thoughts.

I get no response when pushing the starter and the front lamp goes on even when the ignition is turned off. Thoughts?
