I didn't do the POA. I missed going to Paonia yet again -- maybe next year I'll finally be able to attend that rally. Instead, I travelled from Boise to Los Angeles for my mom's 70th birthday party, and then left for Vermont.
No pin and t-shirt for me, I'm afraid. Still, I'm having -- yes, I'm still on the road, near Deals Gap this morning! -- a great ride around before going home again next week.
Just for the record: I'm 48, semiretired (I do some consulting, will do some work in fact after this message), married (I think I'm still married!), from Santa Cruz, California. I've put about 8,000 miles into this trip so far.

Ballen262,
You'd probably get more replies if you did an edit on your opening post. You have to realize that the membership here is the MOA. Many of the forum members have contributed and offer freely of their time to both the MOA and ON. I'm going to venture that participants reading your post are presently busy writing the ON report. When you discuss the POA and the Rally, remember this happened because of volunteers. This applies to the RA also. The people you are addressing, planned the rally, planned the POA, signed you in, took the tickets, lugged the ice, poured the beer, and on and on. You don't see much, "It's about me.", around here.
I think that "WE", the organizations, left some money on the playing table with the POA. There was a genuine and large interest by non participants in the ride. We didn't do enough for these people. I recognized this and took it upon myself to try to be a real ambassador for the POA during the ride. I know many other riders who did the same. This was simply an effort on our part to make the POA a better event. Maybe we should have set up a small POA tent at each stop point? Invested more effort to bring participants and non participants together? If we had established a POA booth at each event, would you have donated four hours of your stop R&R down time to man the booth, press flesh, smile, tell your story. The answer has to be yes, this is what it takes to make things happen.
Hope that you make it to the Rally next year.

I had planned to do the ride since before it was the POA, when I met Gerome (RA rally co-chair) at Dinosaur NM July '05 and he told me the date & location of the 2006 RA rally. The timing of the 3 rallies was just too good to miss.
My opinion on recognition is that the ride was short, only 7819 miles for me. I met many people, some doing the POA some not, who rode much further than I. There was nothing particularly difficult about completing the POA. The pin serves as a keepsake reminder of the wonderful people I met, places I saw, and fun times I had. I wish I were still on the road now, on my way to some other rally somewhere far away.

and myself taking the time to meet some of these people you talk about, I do know they will take this as constructive criticism, if they take it to seriously, then they are not the type of awesome people I take them for, I always, as business owner look for my customers input, helps me become better, or do it differently.
Cant make the world happy, but input is still good.
As for my donation of time, one only needs to ask.

63, retired Navy and completely retired again last year. Did the POA 2-up on our R1200GS, from Alabama (next to Pensacola, Florida) to Alaska, back down through Washington and Oregon with stops in Utah, then on to the three rallies with my 56 year old bride. We left on June 6, returning to Alabama on July 26, riding 13,234 miles total.

Doc:
We did it with stock seats. We also did an Iron Butt 2-up on stock seats on a Triumph Trophy a few years back. Yes, my bride does have an iron butt and nerves of steel, as evidenced by her putting up with me for so many years.
Our congratulations go out to everyone who completed the POA, and to those who wanted to but could not get the time off. Ride safely quickly!!

little over 400 views, and only 12 posts, anyone besides 10 or so on here that did the tour, or only 10 registered users here, rest of POA riders not members.????????????
As I write this there are about 14,363 registered users on the forum. The numbers are difficult to drill down and apply to a specific thread.
That only represents a little over a third of the membership of MOA. Many of them track specific areas of interest. Some basically disappear from the forum for the summer because if they are not working they are riding. As you point out some that participated in the ride may not be members of MOA or either organization. POA with a population of approximately 125 riders, out of the possible 37,000+ members, may be difficult to rally to one thread.
This is why ON remains the mandated communication tool for MOA. It is the one thing that everyone receives.
I had planned to do the ride since before it was the POA. The timing of the 3 rallies was just too good to miss.
Same here :dance

I do have the pin, but so does some who didn't even do the POA.
as they where selling extra pins they had.
This needs correction, as I've seen it posted on the forum a couple of places. No one who didn't sign in with verification of completing the POA was given a pin - at least to the best of my knowledge. A couple of riders who did make the Tour asked for an additional pin, and once it was clear on Saturday that we had extras, I approved those requests. If anyone who didn't make the Tour got a pin they shouldn't have.
Shirts are another matter. It was the intention all along to sell shirts to anyone who wanted one, in part to promote the event, and in part to gauge overall interest and support among folks who couldn't or didn't go. Shirt sales also helped defray costs. Believe it or not, 200 pins and 200 shirts, plus miscellaneous expenses came to several thousand dollars. I figure the more support showed for this kind of event, the better the chances we can do another one. :thumb

I don't have a problem with that Doc, because I *know* you did it, :) but I do have another problem...
At the moment the file folder with the rider log sheets is AWOL. Apparently it got scooped up with some unrelated materials and (hopefully) packed away in some boxes shipped back to the 'MOA Office. Folks there are looking for it, but until it shows I'll be unable to confirm any other requests. We organized the POA trusting a lot on people's honor to not make false claims and from what I saw in Vermont there weren't any. So if you all are good with that approach, I will be willing to send out extras while they last. Just PM me with your name and mailing address. Postage and a padded envelope cost me less than a buck, so just buy me a beer the next time we hook up. (I WILL keep that list in my hot little hands! :evil)

Hey all, Ballen, Greg, and SFDoc
As mentioned in Greg's other thread, I am still on the road, but just found this thread. Now in Danville, Ill., on the way to Lincoln, NE and then home.
I am 61 years old and have the time in the summer because my day job is as an Associate Professor of Accounting at the Univ. of South Dakota. This time next year, I'll be retired. :clap :clap :D :D
I too, planned my ride b/4 the POA was organized. My teaching has me in harness after August 20th each year, so I don't often get to do the RA Rally. They keep choosing September in some far away (from me) part of the country.
Wish I could have met more of the 125 or so who did the tour. The tent or a table at each rally is a good idea for the future, but many of us volunteer at the rallies in other ways. Who would want to sit at the table all day?? Since my National time is full time Beer Garden, I try to enjoy other rallies and volunteer less.
Hey Doc, :wave stop by the Beer Garden in Wisconsin and say hello. I look like my avitar.

:waveYup, that was about right. I got a downpour near Peoria that lasted about 20 minutes and some light showers near Moline. Once I got on I 80, the rest of the day was beautiful. Now in Lincoln with my wife and back to Vermillion on Monday. Thanks for the good wishes. Keep enjoying retirement. I look forward to it.
