A friend and I met them while riding the Cherohala Skyway in N.C. back in April. They had spent some time filming at Deal's Gap. They had 4 bikes in the group and a chase vehicle.
Then, last week I met the producer of the show while serving up beers at the MOA rally.
I'll either be watching or taping it.

So he has this flip up helmet and what appears to be an Autocom mike, however when he flips his helmet up to narrate, he moves the mike off to the side. The audio is poor on those moving segments so I hope they're not trying to pick up the sound through that mike.

I'm still loving the show.

One of the crew has a dual headlight bike.. If it's not a Buell it's a Truimph speed triple.

Notice all the branding is blacked out. I think the helmet is a Shoei with the logo on the front blacked out with electric tape. His BMW jacket is missing the logo on the side.

At the beginning of the show, there was a great shot of his left arm with the name "VANSON" clear to see. It almost looked planned. He changed into a different jacket once the show got going and they were out riding.

I noticed the "Vanson" too. The BMW was blacked out and I do believe it was a speed triple with the double headlights. Oh yea, the helmet was a Shoei.
Hey Alton, why not uncover the logo on the bike, who's going to bitch? Everybody knows if you're going from one coast to the other it better be on a Beemer.

Yea he's wearing a Savannah II Jacket. Great choice. Probably got it in the same shop as were they bought the bike for the series. I have a feeling the Food Channel footed the bill for the bike and clothes the same way they pay for the potatoes and avocados on his show. Ya think ? Is that a great job or what. He gets all the french fies, mashed potatoes, and guacamole he can eat and a R1200RT thrown in.

Four banger, forward slanted K-bike? I'll bow to the Speed Triple observation, though.

Lose the mike and uncover the brand names...and give me more.

Although it seems they vamp for the camera...and the angle may lie, butt I think they ride a little too close to get the "head-on" shot....

The show prior to the road trip was a "behind the scenes" of his Food Channel show. He mentioned that they turn the labels around so that the brand cant be seen whenever the camera gives a shot in the fridge. I didnt catch the reason but it is probably standard so they dont appear to endorse a particular product.

I thought it was odd when he moved his helmet mike away from his face while riding. The bike cam that he talks to must have a microphone. The mike in his helmet is most likely for bike to bike/car communication. I would think it would be a big distraction to try and ride while talking to the bike cam. I hope that wasnt the cause for his accident.

I liked the show. Having grown up in Georgia and ridden all over the South it was like going home again. I also lived in Charlotte for 10 years and enjoyed seeing him go to the South 21 drive-in. He could probably spend a month in each state and make a series on each one. I always look for small restaurants with lots of cars in the parking lot. The more pickup trucks and police cars in the lot the better the food usually is. Cant wait for the nex one.

I'm not sure, but I got the impression that Alton was a Beemer rider before the show and this is his bike....

His website http://www.altonbrown.com/adventure/knowledge/motogear.html seems to show that he's pretty serious about his bike and equipment.

The hour before "Feasting" aired the Food Network ran a retrospective "Behind Good Eats" or somethinf like that, AB was shown wearing a gray/black Roadcrafter in several shots. There has been a fair amount of discussion on this and other boards in the past about his being a rider.

The shots where he's talking into his tankbag remind me of my favorite roadtrip movie "Terra Circa", filmed by a bunch of cheap/kooky english guys with Super8 cameras, mostly held in one hand while they rode.

Me too. Although I do stop to eat when my grumbly tumbly tells me to. It has been a couple of months since I have been on the scales but in the first 3 months after I picked up my RT, I lost 5-8 pounds and I did not change my eating habits.

He seems to carry several riding suits in the van, including an Aerostich, a BMW (looks like a Savanna) and Vanson leathers, plus some strange raingear.

Sorry, I'm not enthused by his picks of places. For instance, on the last installment they stop at a steak joint in Mexican Hat, but don't get to the world's greatest Navajo Tacos at the Cameron Trading Post.

I also find it curious that BMW isn't an advertiser, considering the obviousness of the machine he is riding. Who's the main sponsor? Kia? Maybe the sag wagon is a Kia. Maybe he can rebadge the GS as a KIA.

I can't wait for the episode where his rear drive starts to growl and he fixes it by inserting french fries and chili.

But it's been noted elsewhere that I'm an old curmudgeon "on a high horse". So, ignore my observations, get a giant bottle of Tums and a gallon of Pepto at Costco, and hit the highway food circuit.

I saw the "gravel crash" episode, but wasn't astute enough to record it and watch more carefully to figure out why he crashed.

It appears that he was seated rather than standing on the pegs, drifted over the center where the gravel was deeper, and tried to countersteer out of a crash--which didn't save it.

For a comparatively low speed fall-down, there was sure a lot of damage to bike and rider. Maybe the Aerostich suit with impact pads would have been a better choice than the Vanson leathers. The good news: his brain was protected. He'll probably need a clavicle repair, but broken bones aren't as life-threatening as a sloshed brain.

The show will re-air several more times in the next week. He said on the show he was trying to avoid a rabbit that jumped out in front of him...at least that's his story. In trying to avoid the animal, he may have steered into the piled up gravel in the middle of the road which always presents a problem when a big heavy bike settles down into it...acts like an edge trap and prevents corrective steering.

Kurt in S.A.

manicmechanic

As pmdave noted, he appeared to be sitting down. Also, in gravel and on dirt, one doesn't steer the bike so much as guide it. The front will bounce and wander, and the worst thing is to try to ride it like on pavement. Loosen your grip on the bar, and gently nudge the bike along the desired path. Sharp course corrections can hurt.

I decided long ago if it's that small (rabbit) and that stupid rather than try to out manuver it stay on course, they (potential victim) can change direction faster than I can. I did feel sorry for those doves that were asleep an the NM back road that bounced of my fender and helmet as we (I was not alone in this carnage) woke them with very little warning. I wish more time had been spent on cooking with your motorcycle. I know there was a book about cooking with your car engine. While I admit to trying a couple of things over the years I never saw the point with a car. There was room to spare for hot and cold food. Motorcyclists are always seeking dual uses for equipment, so why not cook with our bikes?

The stew heated by the converter was interesting. I remain curious about the pan they used to cook it, where to get it, what other ideas etc.

I'll always go with Dave's assessment of a crash, but the one thing I learned on my first day of the motorcycle safety course was that crashes are a series of errors that often start well before the incident of going out of control. In this case, Alton said he was trying to avoid a little "Bunny rabbit" and attempted to swerve. Many bad car accidents have happened because a driver tried to avoid a small animal while driving at highway speed. The driver gets killed or seriously injured and the small animal wanders home without a scratch. We have a big problem with buzzards here in Texas and you really have to slow down since they're very tenacious about eating road kill and often won't start to fly until you're right upon them. Even then, I think holding your line and slowing rather than swerving is the best bet. I have found myself hunkering down behind my windshield on occasions, but always trying to at least slow down well before. Haven't hit one yet.

Alton would have done better if he hit the rabbit and then cooked it in the stewing pot attached to the exhaust. Roadkill is road food! :eat
I replayed the TiVo over and over and I didn't see a rabbit. He was probably adjusting his satellite radio.

In the narrative voice over, as they are approaching that gravel road, he states they are getting tired. That ran up a flag with me, even if I hadn't seen the promo of the slide out. And why bother to steer back into the right track, anyway? That's the point of being off-pavement, ride what works. It could easily have been a fatigued and thoughtless reaction to the bunny, right-lane standard and not riding proactively.

I thought the show was goofy at first but it grows on a person. I especially loved when the GS had the broken fuel QD on Pike's Peak...I could relate to that...lol. Hope they have a second season, and maybe he needs a GS with Karoos on too if he is going hunting for road kill...lol
