Hello All-
The moderation team has decided to turn off the ability for unregistered users to post to the Rally Forum (and the rest of the website). Below are the directions for how to register for the forum:
1. Go to...
https://stl.bmwmoa.org/source/security/member-logon.cfm
2. Follow the directions on the page to login. While it may look different, this is the old site where you would have registered for a rally or updated your anonymous listing, etc. If you can't remember the password for this portion of the site, go to the bottom of the page, and click on the "reset my password" link and put in your e-mail address.
If you can log in, skip to #5.
If you had to use the "reset my password" link:
3. Use the link sent in the e-mail address and reset your password.
4. Login with the new password. IF you haven't updated your login (username), you will probably use your Member # for your login.
5. You should now be on a page welcoming you and a new set of instructions. At the bottom of the page follow the link to update your username and password.
6. Update your username and password. This update will apply to both the secure services and the regular MOA site (e.g. the forum).
7. Click on the link for the forum at the top of the page. This will take you to the forum and the 'regular' BMWMOA site.
8. Log into the forum with your username and the password you created in step #6.
If you still can't get in, or if the reset password e-mail never arrives, contact us at webmaster@bmwmoa.org.

There's a new sheriff in town. He's not going to take your guns, just register them. To quote Monty Python: "Now you see the oppression inherent in the system." :D Hey, how much trouble is it to register? What's next? The moderators will censor or delete posts? Been there, done that on other boards. It just leads to move and counter move. Move along, nothing to see here. :boltI think you're missing the point. The ability to post to the forums is seen as an MOA member benefit. No way the local non-riding person complaining about the rally rules was a member or even a potential member. If you're a member - what is the problem with registering to take advantage of the member benefit provided?
Some moderation can be a good thing - the general consensus of the MOA "moderators" is that as little moderation as is possible be done - just enough to keep it civil if things get out of hand, or to calm down personal attacks. Since I can see what moderation is being done - I can assure you - it's not stifling freedom of speech - it's removing porn messages, postings for items for sale in the general forums and personal attacks. These are the things that will drive people away from using a forum.
As an aside - on your other comments: I've also run forums and mailing lists - the most successful one is one I still run - that requires people to post an introductory message before they can generally post, and requires a real name be attached to every message. It has several thousand members interested in a somewhat specialized niche vehicle (BMW's E39) - and absolutely NO spam, NO flames. It's on it's 5th year now. I started it as an experiment in how to make a useful and civil mailing list/forum - and the experiment seems to have worked. 5 years, new members on a daily basis, and very few people dropping out.
Don't know about the last post but thanks for letting them in so they could get there and thanks for keeping them out so we can go back to a member board for the next 11 months. :thumb

I'd like to thank the moderators for the time they generously donate to ensure that the forum is a pleasant, informative, and polite communication medium. This isn't, in my opinion, censorship, this is a necessary function.
Some people forget that with "Freedom of Speech", comes the obligation to treat people fairly, politely, and respectfully, even if you disagree with them.
The forum is for the benefit of MOA members, not outsiders. If prospective members wish to read the Forum, they can, however they shouldn't be able to post on it. If they have serious inquiries, they can e-mail the MOA, and receive a response.
Please remember that prospective members will be developing first impressions of ourselves, and our club from the content of the Forum.
Regards, Rod.

They should create a members only section.
They should create a members only section.
Perhaps I do not understand your post. The access to the forum is normally allowed only to registered users. There are two members only sections the Chartered Clubs and Local Events and the Clubhouse. These do not show when you enter unregistered.
Access to post without registering was granted to the Rally section only, as I understand it, so that guests to the rally could ask questions, obtain answers and in doing so offer suggestions. The need has passed for now and the forum has been returned to its normal terms of operation.

Good move.
There are too many goofs out there (like our friend from Burlington) who have nothing better to do than to anonymously cruise through forums and lob zingers.

They should create a members only section.
How about an unregistered section so they can still post.
They can be amusing :lurk
