Seeing Rick Danko and Garth Hudson at Rhinebeck with the Crowmatix was an unforgetable rally experience, but this year's entertainment was over the top. To see Commander Cody, the Angel Band, plus the Cromatix is one thing but add David Bromberg in a small venue was nothing short of phenomenal! Kudos to all who helped make it happen.

Rally Co-Chair Michael Friedle lined up the entertainment.

The man knows music.

Personally, I thought Commander Cody's performance on Friday was a snoozer. I wish they'd been the Thursday act, and that Popa Chubby had been performing on Friday.

I agree and I said it on the Grateful Thread. Mike Friedle is the Bill Graham of the MOA. Outstanding Music.. David , the Cromatix, the Angel Band.

I also agree that the Commander was a little used up.. But great nevertheless

Can't wait for next years lineup.

I for one, did not care for David Bromberg. To me every song sounded the same and way to low key for a rainy Sat. night. Needed to have something a little more upbeat to counter the weather. At least, I got to bed early that night.

Cody was so-so.

Popa Chubby had everybody dancing.

I did notice that unless you were forward of the soundboard area the sound was not loud enough, hence it was hard to get into the music.. But forward of the soundboard the sound was crisp and tight and could not be beat

I was sorry that the entertainment was in the beer tent. Sorry, but I was more interested in hearing than in drinking. And the beer tent was noisy. David Bromberg, in particular, I would have liked to hear. Socializing and having refreshments made it hard to hear, but I enjoy both.

I was hanging out at the YB Toy Box Thurs night when Poppa Chubby was playing in the beer tent. After EVERY song the crowd exploded in applause so I strolled over to catch a few tunes. He was so great, I stayed an hour and a half till the end. This guy shook the rafters while the bass player and drummer kept a sharp eye on him as Poppa was obviously winging it as he went. What an awesome show!
Thanks to Mike Friedle for a Great line-up of entertainment!!! :violin

If our entertainment budget and schedule next year would accommodate Sonny Landreth, I'd strongly recommend booking him.
If you don't know who he is, find his Grant Street album on Amazon.com and play some of the sound bites.
Eric Clapton is a fan - calls Sonny "the most underestimated musician on the planet."
If you like blues with a Cajun flavor, Stevie Ray Vaughn, Billy Gibbons and Jimi Hendrix, I strongly recommend you check him out.

The entertainment was pretty good overall. Poppa Chubby was great and I think the Crowmatix could have carried the entertainment bill by themselves Friday night, they were just warming up when they had to make way for Commander Cody. Dave Bromberg was a little too sedate for my tastes also.

One Suggestion, how about renting a well stocked juke box to play during the day and between acts? We could all get a chance to hear our favorite tunes and I think the money it earned would support its cost.

Just my two cents… :)

One idea:

A lot of riders are using iPods and other digital audio devices. Why not have our members come up with special playlists for the Rally and provide our own disc jockey for the afternoons and between acts? Just would be a job of patching devices into the mixer and have that output to the PA soundboard. I know a lot of riders with hours of good music on digital players running the country these days. Heck, my portable XM music receiver can record 5 hours of music for later playback! It would be very interesting what our various members would come up with for "their" music hour. :violin

...just back from rally. Lots of contol (imho) but seemingly a Vermont reg thing. Beer...2pm? No music until much later and ending at 11 pm? Young folks at the rally ..... yawn maybe. Lima had lots of music but this year was flat for music. (not meaning to down the existing venue...just not enough good local talent for the beer (opps...water) tent. Met some good folks though! Vermont is clearly not flat (ie the gaps) but the rally...... -Bob

Great idea.. I met the guy running the soundboard and I got to do 3 half hr sets between the music on Fri eve that I had preprogrammed before the rally.. Bubba Zanetti was organizing exactly what you are talking about, but it didn't really get off the ground this year

Outstanding lineup going in, did not disappoint. I was most impressed with "Named by Strangers" on Wed and Popa Chubby on Thursday. Both were extremely talented and provided lively shows with tight musical qualities! Bromberg, as always, was excellent. He is so versatile and covers such a wide range. However, the noise level under the tent made it a little difficult to fully appreciate his talents. Just goes to show what a great time the audience was having! Cody and Louie were excellent as well. Looking forward to next year already!!

I'd love to see it, but I think organizing it exposes the club to a legal problem.
I am not a lawyer, but I follow the whole music licensing situation with some interest as a layman. I'm sure there's someone in the MOA who is an intellectual property lawyer familiar with performance rights and can say for sure, but as I understand it, the owner of the device (ipod, xm, sirius, cd player, stereo, etc.) who, let's assume, is also the licensee of the recording (in whatever format) does not have the right for public performance. The lawyers at BMI, ASCAP, etc. have shown no compunctions about going after bars, clubs, webcast radio, college radio, podcasters and even the Girl Scouts

:beerKudos to Mike, he never disappoints in the music department! I thought the entire lineup was great- I was warned about Poppa Chubby, and I was still blown away! What a performance! And the Bromberg Quartet was a fine finish- I noticed most of the cd's were sold out each night, a good sign that the crowd was happy. And there were sure a lot of them dancing!
:clap
In response to a previous post- due to the proximity of the condos on the hill, our entertainment permit expired "promptly" at 11PM each night- when Named by Strangers played a few minutes late after the volunteer party, we had complaints INSTANTLY- so the rules were clear, and we had to stick to 'em pretty close. Also- having had LOTS of feedback about appropriate sound levels in the beer garden during the shows, the clear majority prefer to be able to talk comfortably with fellow riders; all the requests I got were to turn it down a bit!
:buds
Each year, the rally just gets better- see y'all in West Bend!

If the venue has paid their ASCAP and BMI dues, it should be all good. Most larger venues pay this fee annually to protect themselves of lawsuits and to be able to play background music (as well as music on hold for the phone system) plus it also takes care of issues when a band comes in and plays a CD as preshow music.

Hey Rev...... The Allman Brothers were our first choice for 2005 (instead of Thorogood) Their price is ASTRONOMICAL - outta - THE - roof. trust me...... if I could make that magic happen, I'd be all over it.

On the other hand, Thorogood certainly rocked for us in Lima, so I can't say I was disappointed with the way things happened.

If the Brothers are astronomical, how about one of the "associated bands"?[The Derek Trucks Band or Gov't. Mule ] They might be less costly and would still rock-the-house. Don't need to bankrupt the kitty for a "big name".

That being said, I must agree with Sue that the music @ the last 2 Nationals has been TOTALLY OUTSTANDING! Thorogood got us going at Lima and Pappa Chubby burned-it down in Essex. I'd also like to see Lee Rocker come to the rally - he's a rockabilly bassist who was a member of Stray Cats in the '80s. His solo career CDs have been tasty, and he regularly gigs at biker rallies.

For some really kick a## blues, how about Joe Bonamassa. Have seen him at several venues, and he will not disappoint. Plus he is a fellow biker!!

Check him out at www.joebonamassa.com

Being a native cheesehead and all, I have provided some of my favorite Wisconsin Bands:

For a local band, that has done well. the Bodeans can't be beat. Both Sammy Lamas and Kurt Newmann are from Waukesha. Or how about Steve Miller, a Wsconsin native and UWM graduate.

Some other local talent that would be great for the rally:

The Reverand Raymond and the Chain Smokin Altar Boys

The Eddie Butts Band

Shortstuff (anyone remember Mole Lake?)

The Chris Aaron Band (great blues guitar-like Poppa Chubby)

The Blue Cats (also know as Fat Mike and the Blue Cats)

Willy Porter

I am sure that when all is said and done, the people in charge of the entertainment will make a great selection!!
