Just bought a 83 r100rs that sat for some time and the owner informed me that the clutch does not disengage. When I started the bike and tried to shift it into 1st, no clutch. Any advise?

Advice? Start it in 1st gear in a large paking lot. A few whacks on the throttle and brakes (with the clutch lever pulled all the way back to the bars) will probably break it loose.

Of course, be sure that all of the adjustments are correct, especially at the back of the transmission. Do you feel any resistance when you pull the clutch lever? Does it feel normal or does it pull too easy? If the clutch rod is broken or something along those lines, then you'll never separate the clutch. If the clutch feels normal, then try the throttle/braking maneuver. Hold the lever back to the handlebars so when if it lets loose, you can just coast to a stop.

still have lots to learn
can this be the splines rusted or stuck together
Ive read about splitting the engine and tranny apart to lube the splines ( sounds like a winter project on my list)
is it like a car, wehre the mainshaft can get stuck in a frozen pilot bearing, and thus the clutch not work
so do the tranny splines get stuck ??? is this why it is recomended to lube them ???
still have lots to learn about BMW bikes, and loving every minute :german
so please ignore my ignorance

No,
It is NOT the splines, it is the friction disc stuck to the pressure plates.
It IS like a car but there is no pilot shaft or bearing to stick.
No, this is NOT a reason to lube them. This only happens from disuse. :)

It could be that the clutch is simply out of adjustment.
Standing on the left side of the bike (on the centerstand), look down at the rear of the transmission and locate the clutch arm. Squeeze the clutch lever and make sure the arm moves. If there is excessive play in the clutch cable, loosen the locknut on the clutch arm and turn in the 10mm bolt until you begin to feel resistance.
If that does something, then screw in the adjuster at the handlebar lever and readjust the free play at the clutch arm. The arm should move only about 4mm before you feel resistance.
Check that the cast flanges on the back of the transmission are not broken, and that the pivot pin through the end of the clutch arm is in place, with a spring clip on the upper end to hold it from falling out. It is not unknown for the clip to break, allowing the pivot rod to slide down and break off one of the flanges.
If the clutch arm doesn't move at all when you squeeze the lever, check the cable at both ends to ensure that the cable hasn't snapped.
Once you've checked the cable and adjusted the clutch arm free play, it should work correctly, with the caveat that a severely worn spline on the transmission input shaft can cause the clutch hub to hang up. However, by rolling the bike back and forth while squeezing the clutch, you can determine whether that's part of the problem.
If the input splines or clutch hub splines were worn to the point of failure, there would be no connection between engine and rear drive--as if the clutch were completely disengaged. But you're correct that lubing the input splines every now and then is part of the fun of owning an airhead.
