Hello to all, I have just purchased my first BMW, a '84 R65LS. Where is the best places to order parts online? Such as an oil filter. It is a 1.5 hour drive to the nearest dealer.

I use Bob's BMW in Maryland. They almost always have what I need, and you can order by phone. They also have a down-loadable catalog in PDF format, so you can look up parts before you call.
They've worked out well for me.
Here's a link ---> Bob's BMW (http://www.bmwbobs.com/)

Have you checked with that dealer? Although there's a dealer here in San Antonio, the dealer in Austin has mentioned several times to give them a call and they'd be glad to ship to me.
Another on-line source is the Boxerworks crowd at http://www.boxerworks.com/store.php.

If you're not in any big hurry, the prices at www.chicagobmwmotorcycles.com are hard to beat. However, they can be a little slow on getting some stuff at times. www.realoem.com is a great site for a parts fiche to look up part #s. That can save a lot of time if you're ordering over the phone although Chicago does also have an online ordering system.

Like yourself, I'm a long way from a BMW dealer. But I can call my nearest dealer and they will ship the parts to me via UPS within a day or two.
I also make a point of stocking up on parts when I get to the dealer. Crush washers, filters, wheel bearing seals, etc. etc. I try to keep a spare set of cables on hand, plus a driveshaft boot, head gaskets, valve cover gaskets, and final drive gaskets.
Since I have to pay both sales tax and UPS on all parts from the in-state dealer, I also occasionally order parts from out of state. Shipping often equals sales tax, and some sources will give free shipping for orders over a minimum--usually $50.
I've had good service from Max BMW in NH, and mostly, I like their online catalog. They also seem to have a good stock of parts for airheads. Well, I admit, they also include a bag of M&Ms in every order. www.maxbmwmotorcycles.com
I've also used A&S in Roseville CA, but IMHO their phone service is better than their website.

I order my parts from Max BMW in New Hampshire. Rusty, the parts guy there, is very helpful (I've learned an awful lot just talking to the guy), and always gets stuff out the same day.

I am real happy with Max as well. The have taken good care of me on stuff... even if it is for an oilhead. But a good dealer is a good dealer :)

I don't know about online but I've yet to find any dealer with more "vintage" parts than Irv Seaver BMW. A simple phone call away.

Try Capital Cycle, http://www.capitalcycle.com/body_html/welcome.html
They are a mail-order company near Wash, DC. Parts selection is good, prices range from good to excellent in comparison to dealers.
Parts in stock usually to you in about a week. (UPS shipped - UPS gave employees pay raise, Upped delivery Prices, Slowed delivery times)
Drawback with Cap Cycle - Customer service; they seem to be NOT the great communicators.

Moto-Bins in England. I don't know the current exchange rate and, of course, there is the shipping, but this vendor has an outstanding selection of BMW parts. I've nearly completed a restoration of a '82 R65LS and I bought a number of parts from Moto-Bins. Particularly noteworthy was a stainless set of exhaust pipes for a fraction of what the OEM system costs.

Exchange rate is exactly why I didn't mention them. They are top-notch, and sometimes even worth the money. Five years ago they were a GREAT deal.

Moto-Bins has a reputation for getting things to your doorstep faster than most US merchants. I've only placed two orders with them and both were VERY quick to arrive. I have also heard that they are real sweethearts to deal with if you need further customer service, although you have to catch them during UK business hours (5 or 6 ahead of us). They used to be less expensive than US merchants too (including shipping), but again, no idea now with current exchanges.
I've never bought parts from Boxerworks since they tend to specialise in the /5-6-7 era, but I've been to the shop and met all the staff and parts-guy Matt is a personal friend of mine and I can vouch for his service. Even when he didn't have what I needed he was still willing to discuss and offer useful advice.

I have a 83' R80RT and a 60' R26 and have found Bob's to be the best place for parts. Our local dealer is "questionable" as to prices. I recently needed to order parts for Valve guide seal replacements, Piston Rings, Steering head bearings, and oil filter. The price from Bob's, including shipping was the same as the price from the local dealer for just the Valve guide seal/piston ring parts alone!!
Bob's carries a good stock and their parts people are very knowledgeable. Though for the R26 I get most my parts from Bench Mark Works.

I can't recommend Chicago. I ordered through them online on June 11th. After weeks went by, tried emailing them, never got a response. Called them on the phone, got put on perpetual hold. Finally, I left a message with the receptionist to cancel my order since 6 weeks had gone by, no parts, no return email, no human available on the phone. Just a black hole. I don't think I should have to work that hard to give someone my money. Anyway, YMMV, just my experience. Stopped by my local dealer today to order the parts, paid a couple bucks more but will have them in 2 days. I don't expect stuff here overnight, but I think two months is unacceptable. More than the time factor for me was the lack of response to emails or calls.

I've ordered a few items from Chicago BMW due to the discount. If you're in no hurry and you can wait about two months, they are good option. It should be noted that most items were special order items. If I need something quick, I usually order it from the local dealer.
I've ordered a few items from Moto-bins and the service was great. For those of us who have the been can ignition, Moto-bins sells the springs for the mechanical advance. Those little springs are not available through dealers. Next, I purchased Grimeca front brake rotors, which were about half the cost of new BMW rotors, and came with the carriers unlike some after market rotors.

There are two PRIMO guys for service and parts for airheads. Both deal only with Vintage (pre-1969) and so-called Classic Airheads ( up to about 1982 or so-- does NOT include R65's etc necessarily)
Very small 1 man operation, but a real knowledgeable German, Hans "Hucky" Lowe has ridden, repaired and sold BMW's. Great for personal service, just call.

Vech is a legend in the Antique and Vintage BMW world, and he is expanding into airheads. He is a hands-on, ace mechanic, with a top-notch staff. Again, first rate customer service, one-on-one, and great with a quick email response to technical questions.

I have done business with both, and have yet to stump them with a part that they did not have. HIGHLY recommended.

I have been very happy dealing with Rusty at Max BMW. He has lots of airhead experience and is more interested in solving your problem than he is in selling parts.

+1 for Chicago BMW, unless you need the part right now. Bob's has had just about everything in stock otherwise.

Where is the best place to order parts online?
I've been ordering my OEM BMW parts from Hammersley BMW Cycles (http://www.webparts.com) in Lynchburg, Virginia.
Good "discounted" prices and good service. I've never had a problem with them.

+1. I get good discounted prices and fast service from them. I have used them for years and even bought one bike from them. Their prices are listed online so you can compare up front before you order.
