I requested a special insurance liability card fro GEICO for travel in Canada on July 11 and I still have not received it. I leave tomorrow for VT and GEICO will not fax it to me.

What happens if I don't have this insurance card when attempting to cross the border into Canada? Will I still be allowed to enter Canada?

The only time it is likely to be a problem Is if you need to use your insurance or stopped by Leo's most folks don't even have a clue that a Canadian endorsement is needed...ride wreck free .......

Raven, thanks for the reply. The trip is still on. Hopefully I will receive the insurance card today.

Interestingly enough, my Progressive proof of insurance always said "Good in US and Canada"... until this year. When I called them, they just said "Oh it's good there, but we can send you a card; we only recommend it if you're going to be there a while."

Just checked my GEICO insurance card. It makes no mention of anyplace but Pennsyvlania, which is where I am insured.

If you have an accident there is a hefty fine for not having proof of insurance. They won't ask for it at the border. I figure it's the same thing as tire wear. I put new tires at 50-60%thread wear. Some folks run'un to the cords show. That's why it's called insurance.

Well, I've been driving to Canada for the last decade or so, often more than once a year, and I had never carried a card specific to canada.

I learned of this year, when people started discussing about Vt rally, so I called, and State Farm & Progressive duly issued me Canadian version of the Insurance card.

so having said all that, ride safe, and stay out of LEO's site, and you won't have a problem. It is infact a very good question, so next time I come across my LEO friend in Canada, I'll ask him how they deal with such situation.

I was pulled over in Canada. I only had my US insurance card, and I pleaded ignorance about the Canadian one (really, I had no idea!) , and the Toronto Police let me off with a warning.

You do need a card stating proof of insurance in Canada. All US vehicle insurers will provide it upon request. All they need is your policy number, and the dates you will be in Canada.
