Battery new last year and was on trickle charger over winter. All I get after 24 hours on charger when trying to start is a rapid "sticatto" loud clicking sound; and yes I do have a valeo (sp?) starter. Will do load test tomorrow on battery but if it is ok and the contacts on starter are clean, what next? ( I am not even close to being well off..... hell things are tight actually). :violin

If you left it on a trickle charger for the past six months, maybe your battery boiled dry. I'd check that first.

Wasn't on trickle for 6 months. Just 24 hrs every few weeks thru winter. :

Might consider checking the starter relay to be sure the contacts haven't corroded. I presume it's the same as on my /7, but the relay is a small cube under the tank with a number of spade connectors on it. Unplug and replug it several times to ensure good contact. Some will also use some good lubricant designed for electrical contacts to keep clean and to ward off corrosion.

Here is a link to some info from the Airhead website on troubleshooting the Valeo. http://www.airheads.org/content/view/210/98/ Hope it helps.
I was having problems with the starter on my 92 GS last month. Turned out the glue holding the magnets failed and I replaced the starter with one from Motorrad Elektrik.

rjlord:
Your bike's timing is impeccable; just read Matt Parkhouse's starter article in the July MOA News (yes, I just got it yesterday!). He includes a nice trouble shooting protocol.
If it's your starter that's sick, consider getting a Bosch or NipponDenso unit.
