View Full Version : R1200R: BMW anounces and MD takes a ride
The World of BMW (http://www.worldofbmw.com/content/article.asp?article=556&artDate=12/07/2006) site is the first official BMW site I have found anouncing the R1200R
Then I wondered over to Motorcycle Daily (http://www.motorcycledaily.com/11july06_bmw1200r.htm) and their feature of the day is a ride report.

Why didn't BMW put the oil cooler there back in 1994?

I've been biting my nails for a few years now, hoping that the r1200r isn't going to make me regret buying my 1150r.
I can now safely say that I prefer the styling of the 1150 over the 1200.
Perhaps it may lighter, more HP, more torque, etc...
...but I'm perfectly happy with my 1150!!!!!
(not to mention the 1200r has the Baboon's Butt tail light as the K1200R)

ugh, i KNEW they'd do something to ruin that bike. that taillight ruined the K bikes for me too. thank god the back end of the new S looks good
man, and i was really liking that R in comparison to the 1100/1150 R's
This is like one of the commercials where the lovely young thing comes walking over points at you and seductively waves you over. You can barely walk across the room because you are melting at the vision of her. You are just going to reach out, grab her had and take her out on the dance floor and she turns around and shows you the baboon butt.
:hungover
Something tells me there will be an aftermarket answer to this. I can wait my Roadster is great. :D

Give me the tall seat, the fly screen, and some hardbags, and I'm good to go. I'm still riding 2 airheads, which I love, but I really want one of my motorcycles to be "modern".
Can't wait to see one in the flesh. :heart

I've taken my r1150r and turned it into a decent tour-er when needed. Some hard bags, a nice windscreen, a top case... No problem hauling 2 people and lugage a fair distance... a true "sport-tourer."
...looking at the r1200r on the other hand... it just doesn't strike me as having the same spirit. Heaven help the person that has to ride on that pilion seat for an extended period of time. More of just a naked "sport" bike.
If I were to "upgrade" from my 1150r, at this point I feel like the more logical step would be to the 1200RT.

And you know what!? The more I look at the pics of the r1200r, the more I feel like it has some Buell styling in it's blood... almost like it's the BMW version of the Buell Blast? Anyone else see that, or am I just crazy?

welcome to the AARP, may i collect your dues
:stick
seriously man, that seat is no worse than the seat on my S, i can "tour" semi comfortably with a passenger for AT LEAST 200 miles a day, lol...............

There are two aftermarket alternatives for the baboon butt. A clear lens is on the market to match up to a red LED light behind it from "Brake!". There is also a unit distributed by Wunderlich or Wudo (or somesuch) with rows of LEDs set into an opaque dark plastic insert that has a bit of Batman Revisted style to it. Check the Pirate website for links.
I'm not a clear lens fan, but if I got enough ribbing to be a pain in the ass (pun intended), I might be forced to go that route.

Dunno 'bout the R1150R seat, but if you ask my girlfriend's opinion about the pillion seat on my R1100R you might learn a few new bad words...

Oh, I'm in no way trying to suggest that the r1100/1150r's pillion seat is a bastion of comfort... Derek can attest, my girlfriend rode it for 1200+ miles in a weekend, and she was very clear about it's comfort.
...my point was that the 1200r's seat looks even less comfortable, insofar as the designers decided that this bike really isn't designed to do any touring 2-up, period.
As far as the baboon butt... sure, an aftermarket lense would take care of alot of the problem. For me it's just the principal of the thing... these things are supposed to be engineered to perfection! ;) (I'm not going to even mention the monstrosity that is the r1200s' rear... I heard someone once equate it to looking like the rear of a female cat in heat). Sorry Derek... (I think your R1100S is one of the sexiest oilheads anyway ;) )

I'm gonna have to quote you on that one... :D
"What do you mean?!? Xaque's SO could handle it for 2 Mm in a weekend?!?" :deal
(which'll continue along the lines of "Who the hell is Xaque?!?" :fight)
(FYI, Mm = Megameter = 1k km --> sounds like extra far...)
Don't worry, I'm not complaining, I don't mind riding by myself... Still need to get her a bike of her own...

Don't forget, BMW says this is a roadster. If you look at the car world, this would be equivalent to the Z3 or Z4. It'll carry two folks, but long term comfort for two isn't really part of the deal. It's for tearing around on the weekend.
The ST is the better bet for two up, I think.

Since you're bringing up bimmer cages: I prefer the baboon butt over the bangle butt.

Jacco sez about the oil cooler on the front of the engine...
'cuz it gets hit by stones/dirt maybe? Must be a PITA to keep clean...
Yeah. The front of my R1150R's engine is always messed up with tar, bugs and whatnot. That oil cooler is going to take beating and get clogged up, but I bet the aftermarket will come up with something pretty quickly.
I like the R1200R a lot, but I also like my R1150R. I'll have to travel to a dealer to see one in the flesh when they appear in showrooms in the US.

Here's a link to a fairly long article about the new bike. Personally, I want to see it and ride it. Then, I'll decide whether I should trade up from my 2002 R1150R.

It ought to be great fun, but the design lacks the sharpness of the R1150R... at least in photos.
