The Osprey Just 13 miles from the Rally, riders with an interest in birds/birding can view six breeding pairs of osprey. Once seriously threatened by the shell thinning effects of ddt, these graceful birds feed primarily on fish. They can be seen on the southeastern end of the 'Sandbar' ,a causeway/and bridge connecting Grand Isle to the rest of Vermont. One of Vermont's electric companies has placed six nesting platforms on power poles, in the delta of the Lamoille river. The Platforms are visable from the roadway, with a little patience you will likely see these birds, hawking and diving feet first to collecting fish on or near the water surface and carrying their prize to their waiting offspring.
The 'Sandbar is a greatplace to the view the sunrise, or just a good place to stop and take in the expansive view to the southwest, or just watch the windsufers, or just watch for other water loving inhabiting the lake.
Getting there is simple head north from the Rally sites Rt 2a exit, remain on 2a through Colchester about 5 miles, turn right onto Rt7/2 continue north about 3.5 miles to the traffic light at Chimney Corners, turn left onto Rt2 and continue west ,passing over the interstate, and continue about 3.5-4 miles to the Sandbar Wildlife Management area and Park.
One can also continue west and north on route 2 to the Champlain Islands and the ferry to Plattsburgh.
