hi everyone,

i was wondering if anyone has attended Oilhead Tech sessions at past rallies and what your experience has been.

the reason i'm asking is because i am due for my 12k service on my '02 r1150r and i've been planning on doing the 12k service myself. i've been reading a lot of posts and articles, mostly regarding TB sync and valve adjustments and was initially planning on doing the service myself since the bike has 12,200 miles on it. but, since i've never done it before i started to wonder if it would be best for me to wait until after attending the Oilhead Tech session at the rally in the hopes i'll be more up to speed on doing the service. the downside is, by the time i'm back from the rally i'll likely have 14k on the bike. the fluids are good til then as the oil was just changed and all fluids were changed at 8,500 miles but the valve adjustment and TB sync will be past due if i choose to wait. best case scenario would be if there were a demonstration on the valve adjustment and TB sync but from the looks of the schedule, it appears to be more discussion than demonstration.

any opinions as to whether i should do it now, by myself and on schedule or wait until after the rally to do the service late but hopefully more familiar with the procedures?

thanks for your input! jason

It usually is a discussion only. If you need a demo, try to find the back issues of BMW-ON that had the articles on valve adjustments and trottlebody sync.
Or you could try to hook up with somebody on the BMWSporttouring.com site. They have sometimes tech sessions in different parts of the country.

I just checked the seminar schedule. I think Frank from Adventure Motorcycle Gear is giving a seminar on using the Twinmax unit on Saturday @2:30 pm. This unit is what everybody uses for the TB sync. Between his seminar and Paul Glaves seminar, you should be able do to it with out any problems. There are also some pdf's on ADVrider that you can download.

The best you can get is sharing a beverage and conversation with someone who has done it, which I am pretty sure you can find at the rally. I would recommend going to both sessions...

Oilhead Tech will be primarily a Q&A format - Joe Katz and I, and maybe one or two others will be doing it. We can easily explain Throttle Body Synch. It is not particularly complicated, unless there is a problem like an air leak which can confound it. We can cover that too.

Jason,

You might checkout the Internet BMW Riders (IBMWR). They have a Lot of Tech info on the Oilheads.
