I'm looking at a 1975 R-90/6 that needs rear drive splines. That is all I know that it needs.
Old machines usually need extra parts though and I really liked my 1976 R-90/6.
What are parts like these days and future? I cant help but think that there are out there with as many airheads as there are.
Any comments appreciated.

On ibmwr.org there is a classified section with a listing dedicated to airheads. Of course there is e-bay also. If you get Airmail, the news letter of the Airheads Beemer Club, you will find advertisers that cater to our bikes and a classified page as well. I have no difficulty in obtaining any parts I need using just these resources.

There are also several used parts places, like Airhead Salvage and Re-psycle.

Hi, Twins4life,
You have BMWMOA Flea Market, e-bay, any number of used parts sources - many of which advertise in the BMW Owners News, and also your friendly, local BMW dealer. Most parts for any BMW bike from the 1970 model year to current are available from BMW. There is a cost factor, as most parts prices have taken a significant jump recently, but the parts are available. Try going to your local Suzuki, Yamaha, Norton or (Meriden) Triumph dealer and trying to buy a part - any part - for a 1972 bike. It's probably available (probably have to be ordered from the parts warehouse) from BMW, not available for any price from Yamaha or Suzuki and available, but from the aftermarket, for Norton, Triumph, BSA, etc.

Here's a good place to start. (http://www.bmwmoa.org/flea/index.php?bikeseries=Rbikeair&catid=1)
I like the RS that's on there.

Parts are no problem. Most everything I've needed for the 1974 R90/6 I've been helping my dad rebuild are still available from the dealer.

Gear sets are very pricey and almost everybody on the splines topic has them rebuilt, by many different shops around the country. Ashland, Oregon has a Beemer dealer that deals with this, I know. You still have to buy the wheel spline part from BMW, which is readily available at dealers, etc.. Usually, in many cases the rebuilt splines are harder material and last quite a bit longer. In my case, this is whats happening with my R100/7. Randy13233

The 1970 thru 1975 airheads had a different pushrod tube arrangement than did the 1976 and later bikes.
Because of this, a 1975 /6 cannot ever get bigger then an R90 without a complete engine swap. A 1976 R90/6 on the other hand can be upgraded to a R100 with very little effort, which makes top-end parts far more available.
The pre-76 bike also had a smaller front axle, and the "/5" switchgear, rather than the "/7" switchgear that came out in 1976.
Having said that, I haven't had any issues keeping my airheads on the road.
YMMV.

http://www.capitalcycle.com/body_html/welcome.html is a good spot for hard to find parts, and sensible prices.
Customer service is lacking, though
