Got a leak and some tools, but my Clyer isn't clear whether I need my certificate of training from BMW to get to it. In order to replace the gasket from under the timing chain cover, must I remove the coolant, the radiator, the crankshaft cover, and cylinder head cover? Whether I do or don't, once the timing chain cover is ready to remove, can I leave the Hall transmitter cover in place?

I don't know what model you are specifically working on, but I would remove the Hall cover and plate anyway. Just mark the location, remove the three little screws, and pull it off. The reason is that you may wish to replace the seal in the timing cover, and that thing is a PITA to deal with if the plate is in place.

I think you could do the re-seal on a K four without removing the crank cover or draining the coolant. You could just loosen the crank cover screws and pull it out slightly when removing and reinstalling the timing cover IMO.

Although, since your bike is 12 years old, it might be worth draining the coolant and replacing the thermostat. You're gonna have the fairing off anyway.....may as well do everything.

Thanks, Rally Rat. What's IMO?

We should post a list of all these acronyms somewhere in the Forum.

The HES trigger rotor is screwed to the end of the crank with 3 little screws
so it needs to come off to remove the cover, also, unless you can find a way to snake the oil psi switch wiring around the water pump it should ( water pump cover) also come off. HES needs to come out too; just mark its location as noted and lay it on the top of the engine. Crank and valve covers must come off, dunno about the radiator

The k11, like the k12 has the cam chain tensioner in the timing cover, unless you pin it the spring will come out a flyin once the cover comes off. The k100/75 cam chain tensioner it attached to the block :deal

I would suggest black rtv for sealant left overnight to cure after bolting together. Suggest rtv around the cam chain tensioner oil boss as well but don't over do it. There is no gasket except for on the HES, valve and crank covers

Good time to check/adjust valves or rebuild the water pump if needed.
