Cars. Got a slight problem there, but we've been managing it pretty well. There's always power tools, but I think I'm set on those. There's high tech stuff like computers and the like, so I'm set there.

When you really get down to it, bikes are where my time and money go.

Well, along with the home renovation stuff. Got a lot of money tied up there.

Well, one horse anyway. Belongs to the g/f. No such thing as a free horse. have to board them. put shoes on. put hay in. Have vets take pictures of. Need a trailer for 'em to ride in, and a diesel truck to pull it. Not to mention show gear. Normal leather gloves: $15. Same gloves in a tack shop, with a picture of a horse on the price tag: $85.

Sorry, got carried away crying. .:cry Ask GSAnderson, he knows what I mean.

Hey 1969 R90/2, thanks for being lighthearted about the good natured ribbing. As you clearly discerned, no offence was intended or taken (apparently unlike the fellow from BC. What's up with him, I would like to know?).

As you understand, many high stress professions often fall prey to some sort of harassment and lawyers, doctors, and politicians rank at the top of the lists. We all may take a beating for what we do but, the way we react will ultimately decide the means to the end.

In my intended profession, people often cite psychologists as exonerateing criminal behaviors within the judicial system. Psychologists are also often labeled as quacks (there is psychologists for dogs you know) and headshrinkers who only intend to shrink a patients monetary worth (so, tell me how you feel and why do you feel that way? Cha-Ching! Your time is up! That'll be $385 for your one hour session and I'll see you again in two days). It is unfortunate that a few bad apples within any known profession can tarnish the good works relayed through that profession but, all must be taken in stride when dealing with critique and criticism.

As it is I harbor no ill feelings towards most lawyers (does my ex-wife's count? hehe) as it remains a profession for which today's society must have in order to survive. I have always believed a good lawyer is one that is in defence of ones self and I have had the use of some really fine lawyers in my time!

Oh yes, you are right, what will happen to the children I treat and grow up to sue someone? Well, hopefully I will have made some progress with them in their early years so that they may not be so inclined to sue! If not, then I will have failed and may be in need of your services! (Hey, I'll trade you one good headshrinking session for a plea bargain!)

In closing, I commend you on returning back to school and I will have you know that I am not too far off of your age in my returning back to gain a degree in child psychology.

I wish you god speed and good luck in your pursuit of Law school.

Ride safe and keep the rubber side down! You have one beautiful motorcycle there and I would hate to have to treat you for any psychological trama if it was to be damaged.

Oh, did I mention that I will give a ten percent discount to any MOA member for headshrinking services?

:banghead here! :p

DDHR1150RT --

Thanks for the kind words and encouragement.

I think you sum it up...both your chosen profession and my intended profession include enough high-profile examples of abuse and malpractice that the reputations are what they are. Probably especially so with laywers.

You never know, with balancing law school in the evenings, a career during the day, a wife and two kids full-time, I may be in need of your services at some point.

However, a long ride on quiet roads seems to return me to the proper frame of mind. Even at BMW vintage parts prices, the 2-wheeled form of therapy is still a bargain.

Since so many love alcohol, firearms and computers, I'm surprised that nobody has posted a favourite quote of mine. I don't remember who said it, except that it was someone I'd never heard of, but it went something like this: "computers allow people to make more mistakes and faster than any other invention in human history with the possible exception of handguns and tequila." I love that one so much that if I ever play in a rock'n'roll band again I think the band will have to be called Handguns & Tequila.

On the "more is better" level, I've got five grandkids, and still counting.

I'm over the edge with one new bike and one truck too many.

Wow. Back in the day, I worked for a MFG of MRI systems. The
power amplifiers were all crowns. If I remember correctly, they
were a 100A each channel (3 channel) of constant current. Building the first set, we joked that if it didn't work, we could
just sell it to the Grateful Dead. That brings back some memories.

I know those amplifiers/power supplies well. Crown got out of that market about three years ago. We use the units for clean power supplies at various voltages and frequency at the factory. So when we test amplifiers that are running at 240V50Hz we use a LVG to power it.

And yes, the Dead went out with Crown amps last summer.

[QUOTE=I don't get wrapped up spending wads of money on "in today", "out tomorrow" products such as computers, cell phones, digital cameras...basically anything high tech. I consider those products a big waste of money![/QUOTE]

Well, that's what makes horse racing....I don't spend "wads" on anything....99 BMW 328i w/120k, '83 Chevy truck with 130k, '02 Jeep with a bunch of stuff the PO put on. Butt I do like to be a proper American...All those things one might consider a waste, I consider a "motivating diversions". After all, what's a guy gonna do without a new IMac or a Canon HD20 HD camcorder, or a 50" electronic wall hanging, a Kimber Custom Shop 45, or another Martin guitar?

I see it this way:

First, to each his (or her) own.

Second, anyone who stands up and says "I don't need to be an early adopter, it's a waste", or the other side of the spectrum, "Hey! Look what I've got", could be coming from a strange place.

For me, inconspicious consumption keeps me up with the times, keeps me working, and coming in right behind the early adopters, in this context, makes perfect economic sense after they take the first hit. And it does to my adult kids and grandkids, too. They get the perfect residuals when I get bored......

I know a guy who saved his lunch bag every day, would save the unused lettuce if he could......saved every dollar, bought a couple of rental houses...everything was about retirement.....everything.....Then his wife left with half his stash after he spent almost all the other half in a violent legal battle. He was too cheap and she could stand it no more.

Middle ground.

Stunned that there aren't more 'Car Folks' here; and particularly BMW car folks. You do know they build cars, too; right? Sure; it was a slow start, taking them a full 5 years after the first bikes, but still, how many of you remember anything before 1928?

I've been an active BMW CCA member for over 22 years now. Just a little longer than my current car (the '87 535is from which my screen name derives) has been around. I'm a driving instructor (since 1992) for Badger Bimmers and I've just recently (past 3-4 years) fallen in with a nefarious group of other E28 owners/drivers/fixers like me.

Even before that, I was a scale model builder. Mostly cars, but the occasional BMW-powered aircraft (like a Fokker D-VII or a Focke-Wulf 190G) finds its way across my table and into a display case along with all the BMW race cars - and a couple of 1/9-1/12 scale Airheads. I also have a soft spot for '60s non-GM muscle cars, especially Mopars, but having driven them when new, I stick to BMWs for the street, leaving Hemis, 427 'Cammers and GTXs for the display table. Here's one of the few of my builds I can link to, a 1/12 scale model of the 1975 Alexander Calder-designed LeMans 'Art Car':

I'm a PADI Divemaster. I have a passion for diving WWII era shipwrecks in particular. I've been on a break from the hobby for a few years and haven't been a working Divemaster for many years before that. I've been eyeballing my gear and starting to make plans to get it ready for Spring. I stopped when one of my diving buddies moved away and another sold his boat and bought a horse. I guess he wanted to hang out with his wife more than me, go figure.:scratch I was a little burned out and ready for a break. Now I'm ready to go back. Time to start networking for diving buddies.

But she still has an A4; a lightweight '01 model.

I know this may sound crazy but, I really do love my job. Being a firefighter / medic is the greatest job in the world. So I look at my job as a hobby. Even though it can be tough at times, I try to make the best of everything. Even tragedy.
My second is interest is old muscle cars. In fact I may be the proud owner of a 68 Shelby Mustang GT500KR. My cousin has owned it since birth and has offered me a great deal.
BMW Motorcyles are definately my true passion. I do not care if it is a rat bike, airhead, oilhead, k-bike, vintage, etc. They are all great.

horses, all four of them, two arab mares, a anglo arab gelding and a apaloosa mare. We love them all and do a bit of riding as well. In her youth my wife rode 100 mile endurance races, (the iron butt of horses) and barrel raced. Now we just trail ride. Me well I just try to stay on, counter steering doesn't work so well on a horse.:laugh

I think that a lot of us are 'car guys' but haven't posted because we can only afford 'ordinary' cars. I really enjoy my VW GTI, but I doubt that many of you would get much kick out of a picture of a silver hatchback. Even as GTI's go it's a bit of a sleeper and blends in well among all the econoboxes.

Pat, congrats on the KR if you get it! Those are some really special cars. I used to date (and am still friends with) one of Carroll Shelby's grand-daughters and even then I never got to ride in one (each of the Old Man's children has a KR; two of the three are kept in storage, including the one belonging to the mom of my former S.O.).
I did however get to go off-roading with Mr. Shelby once, but that's another story! :D

And funny, I remember after a field trip across the river to West Point (27 years ago... to review their setup and attention to detail in their food service), thinking I'd wished I'd gone there instead...

It's a very tough business, and I have great respect for the men and women I trained with and the men I studied under (all men, mostly grizzled, stern European masters; and the Americans, all Military). However, at 28, after 13 years of cooking, I got married and grew tired of working every friday and saturday and holiday night and generally coming home 3 hours before my wife rose to go to work... So, I retired from a biz that I knew like the back of my hand (I was a head chef at the time) to go into another creative industry. (One thing led to another and I wound up creative director for a few good companies; so it worked out in the end).

But if you do like cooking, there are hundreds of great books (stick to the technique books, they're the most valuable) and markets and farms are always filled with great product. Recipes are easy. Timing takes practice. But if you're good with a knife, know how to dress an animal and are familiar with it's anatomy, you can take it further and hone and master the art of primal and subprimal butchery. For me that's what I've always excelled in and enjoyed. Quality preparation and ingredients and it's hard to go wrong with the end results. Practice and Bon Appetit!

Thanks Jon and Rinty, and yes, it *IS* an awesome car for Colorado. The handling is great on mountain-roads, and the turbocharger makes altitude just another statistic. It ran just the same at the top of Pike's Peak (14110') as it does down here in Dallas (approx. 650'), except for one interesting side-effect: Up in the altitude of CO I can drive like James Bond and get much better MPG than I can just toodling down here. I haven't quite figured that one out yet, but I'm not complaining.
And even for a front-wheel-drive car with low-profile sporty tires, it's fun the snow. I think it was on the same trip as Pike's Peak (April '06) that it snowed while I was in the Denver area, and I can recall a lovely power-slide I did on a snowy 270-deg. off-ramp in Castle Rock. Perfectly modulated with the throttle, just enough slide to be fun. I also once parked on a snowy slope at a scenic-spot near Idaho Springs and found that turning off the ASR (I'm guess that's a German acronym for limited-slip) and doing maximum-wheel-spin in the snow with the steering at full lock turned the car around an axis that intersected the rear axle. This was actually useful at the moment, but it's also a fun car to do donuts in icy-snowy parking-lots...especially in reverse! :D

Just an observaton, but Alcohol and Firearms are running pretty high percentages. Wonder how tobacco would have fared on the list? (ATF gets the trifecta?)

Oh, LOTS of stuff. Most seem to defy those few narrow categories in the poll, so I went with Other. This is the order they pop into my brain:

- serious mountain biking
- rural living (land clearing, trail building, firewood, etc)
- municipal volunteer (chairman, ZBA)
- antique tractors
-wrenching just about anything and everything
- serious home improvement (I don't mean hanging wallpaper; talking brand-new bathrooms & kitchen from the bare joists up, all carpentry, electrical, and plumbing)
- woodworking
- snowshoeing, winter hiking
- sea kayaking
- mental lubricant of choice is GOOD beer (current fave Dogfish Head)
- oh, how about that GS... almost forgot...
