View Full Version : My GS at last! / Oil level question

I received my new GS yesterday and it's everything I expected and more. :dance I'm very impressed with the level of sofistiquation and the ride in general. Moreover, my wife loves it too! :love She's very comfortable on it, especially with the padding of the top case (my previous bike was a ZX-9 and she rarely rode with me).

I notice that the oil level is higher than recommended in the manual, I can't even see the oil line when cold. Could that contribute to some vibrations at higher rpm? Should I remove some oil? I looked for the drain plug but I'm not sure if that's the "recessed hex screw" under the skid plate. :dunno

Comments anyone?

Congratulations and welcome aboard :wave

Your oil is probably fine, check it warm, on the center stand say after a brief five minute shut down. (getting gas) After that, just keep it filled between the red lines. It will burn some for quite awhile so keep checking on a regular basis.

The vibration is probably also normal for a boxer, give it some time to break-in and mention it during the 600 mile service/check.

Enjoy, you'll be very happy with it. :D

What Doc said.

Congrats on your new ride. Welcome to the forum, too.

Send pix soon.

The Boxer will smooth out with mileage and produce more power. It WILL get better with age! And more than one sport-biker has had a slap up side the head from a GS on and off the track.

I just figured how to do this so here we are...

Dennis:

Just get eye level with the window and then have somebody tip the bike over a few degrees so you can see where the oil level is.

P.S. If you're not on the Rocky Bow Riders e-mail list, come out to the breakfast 9:30 Sunday morning at Dave's in Bragg Creek. It's on the south side of the shopping centre, the "non-bike" part. I'll even tip the bike for you, but it might cost you a ride.

Congrats! Nice ride…

A flashlight does wonders for checking the oil. I usually can’t find the line in the sunshine without one. As your manual says, ride until the temp is up. Then park on the center stand, give it about 5 minutes and then check your level.

Yes. The drain plug is the recessed hex-head on the bottom of the crank case. There is no real great way to drain off a little oil. As DOC said, it will burn some oil. If you are a bit hi don’t worry, it will drop down into the sight glass within a few hundred miles. Your dealer may have “topped it off” a little in anticipation of pretty rapid oil consumption during the break-in…

Welcome to the forum and the GS world! Very nice bike. After the break-in get out and take a long ride, take plenty of photos, then get back and upload them for us to see. We love feasting on other's adventures and excursions. :eat
