View Full Version : Aftermarket exhaust

I was wondering if there has been any comparison tests of aftermarket exhaust pipes? With/without catalytic converters. Dyno test and decible meter readings would be icing on the cake. :brow
I was in a discussion with another RRS owner when he asked about what he should do to get a healthier exhaust note. Aside from the question of emission laws, I said my first inclination would be to eliminate the catalytic converter (not the OS sensor) and run it with the stock muffler. My reasoning is that it would get rid of a few pounds and some backpressure. :D
Any help in researching this question would be helpful. Thanks. :type

I have a 04-1150RT...I just installed a Ztechnik at Mortons BMW. I am planning to dyno test it next week..
As far as inital reaction:
-Healtier Note
-very esponsive ...due to broader torque
-Better handling

I will update shortly.

I have a Remus titanium system on my '02 R RS, including the pipe that replaces the converter. The stock system is very heavy - 17 pounds! I installed it to get a better sound, and to reduce back pressure. I was not concerned about power but my very knowledgeable tech, Dave Anderson of Anderwerks, says it allows for a number of extra horsepower.
The sound is very civil, fairly quiet down low and growing to a nice snarl at about 3500 rpm. On the highway you can't hear it unless you're accelerating or riding next to a cliff, when you get a lovely symphony.

I would strongly recommend this system, and suggest you try and ride some oilers that have different pipes installed.

I too would like a little more sound out of my R1100S. I will be checking out the Remus exhaust at my local dealer next week when it goes in for service.
I am hoping to hear some at the MOA Rally next month.

How about the Staintune exhaust?
How does it compare to the Remus?

I think the Staintune is also considered to be a high quality product, like Remus. And the BMW's I have heard with them installed haven't seemed to be too loud.

I think all the systems mentioned above are high quality units; it's basically a matter of getting the exact sound level you want.

i've got a staintune on my 02 r1150ra.

it has a little choker plug you can stick in the end. it quiets it down enough for me. i think bikes should be pretty quiet. originally the plug was out, and i thought it was too loud, too aggressive sounding. i realize some folks really dig that. ;)

Did you have to do anything else to the bike other thna replace the exhaust?
Did you dump the cat?

I put on the Remus Titanium w/ cross over (cat eliminator) and the Rheinwest chip. The baffle is still in the end of the pipe.(rivet can be drilled out and the baffling pipe removed, then a screw put back in place of the rivet and the baffle reinstalled.) Purs nicely and will bark when you open the throttle. Torque band is all over and there is definitely an increase in power. I don't have access to a dyno locally, but the improvement was fabulous. All these mods are on an 02 R1150RS. With the excellent factory headers (doulble ported pipes) you couldn't ask for a better system. Well, the ohlins front and rear do make this bike just perfect. Power and handling, what more could you ask for.

I repaced the cat and stock exhaust some years ago on my '94, R1100RS. Nice sound, less weight, a little quicker throttle response.

I got a bigger impact installing a Techlusion, in terms of performance.

I don't think there is much you can do to these bikes to realy improve HP, due to the BMW fuel injection system. It works to defeat you

The Ztechnic added mid range power. Losing the weight of the cat equals at least 1hp. Nice sound too. The irony is; the easiest way to gain effective power is to lose wieght. If I weighed 180 instead of 230 it would be the same as gaining 7hp approximately. I believe every 7 lbs =1hp in effect.

When I bought my R1100RS, I asked the dealer what I could do to improve the performance. He told me install carburetors.

My experience is that all you can do tweak around the fuel injection - hence the need for the Techlousion to fix the fuel injection induced surging that BMW denied existed for so loooooong

Pleeeeese spare me your apologies for the Germans.

I am on BMW #3. Great bikes. Could be better.

Think they are honest enought to admit, and fix the styling or the R1200ST? I had great hopes for BME #4.

sorry, i've been out of touch with this thread.

the previous owner did the work. from what i can see, he installed the exhaust lowering kit, and the pipe, and that's it. (he did a canisterectomy too)

still got the cat.

i'm not a good enough, smooth enough, fast enough, rider to need that extra 3 HP. when i can ride the fastest bike in the world at its peak of performance, and i'm still feeling like i'm going too slow, then i'll add "performance mods." till then, my little R1150RA is plenty of bike for me. i went out this past weekend and rode curvy roads to the best of my ability. i was taking big sweepers at about 85 mph and that was the best i could do. i still have a half inch of chick strip on my rear tire, and never scraped a peg, so i dont think the bike is the problem. :D

i'd like to know who the dude was on the r1200gs that passed me like i was standing still. that dude was fast, and really freakin smooth. i lusted after his skeelz. :thumb

I just installed the Ztechnik exhaust on my R1100S last week. I would give the same ratings. It was pretty easy to install too and looks fantastic.

To "Custom" in Austin, Texas. There is an excellent book out by Nick Ienatsch Sport Riding Techniques. Read it and your skills will improve.
