Mine is making noise at 10k, we checked and redid some undertank plumbing and it's venting OK. Hard to believe that it could croak at 10K since the previous did at about 20k...

Dealer said $325 but I suspect that there are alternatives. One guy on IBMWR used a 4 cyl Mustang pump for his K1100RS.

Any thoughts?

Beemer Boneyard has a used one for $120, if your bike is post-'93. He also has new ones for $229.

Any thoughts?Run it dry frequently? That will kill one rather quickly. If you never let the tank go dry and keep fresh gas in it - the pump life is actually pretty much unknown. I know people with over 300k on the original pump.

Old gas kills it, as does "wet" gas (water) and running it dry.

run it dry. Always has 2+ gallons when I fill it.

Larry Romestandt( who you should meet, a K bike genius like your self)
checked the under tank, so it may be the pump.

10K for $325 doesn't add up for me. Tehr eis some stuf on IBMWR that I was told about.

Thanks.

Thanks.

I've been reading a lot of BMW boards for quite a while and, IIRC, K-bike fuel pump problems are essentially non-existent. I'm sure any mechanical device can fail at some rate and you may have been unlucky twice but I also have to think that if your current fuel pump is goin' bad at 10K and the "previous one lasted 20K" there has to be something unique about your bike or how you are using it that is causing a unique and rare problem.

I'm on my 3rd fuel pump on my K75 right now. The first failed and it was my fault. The gas went sour in the tank and froze up the pump. The second lasted LESS than 4,000 miles before it also froze up when I was running gas with MTBE in it in Arizona. I couldn't get it to loosen up at all and had to replace it. I do not want to run any alcohol fuel in the bike at this point as I am very leary about pump life with it. FWIW the fuel lines in the tank also started degrading. They were very soft and mushy on the outside.

Make darn sure the fuel screen is clean and secure. The pump will lock up on a very small piece of debris and getting fuel at the small cheap stations can load up your tank with gunk.

I live in Santa Clarita if you want to ride etc. I'm planing a trip with a couple of Beemer Budies up PCH to who knows where, probably a 4 day'er. Maybe to Eureka to the place where they brew the Downtown Brown Beer. Let me know.

I didn't ride for 4-5 months after my accident and I wonder if that could be part of the problem? I wonder how long it takes for the gas to "sour" and screw up the pump???

I installed a Mustang fuel pump from napa (the same one you read about at IBMWR) in my 85 k100 last fall and have not had any problems with it. I figured at less than a one third the cost of a new pump it was at least worth a try.

Do you have a part number for that pump?

NAPA # P74095 IIRC it's made by Carter for a '95 era Mustang @ ~$85.

Thanks, it would be interesting to see if that is pretty much the same pump the K75 uses. I'd rather buy one at that price than the inflated BMW price!
