Just got back from Alaska and want to switch rides to a 1150 GS. I am looking for a bike that can handle the distances but still be comfortable off road. Not necessarily the haul road, but decently graded dirt/gravel. Really missed not being able to run some of the old mining roads I heard about around Hyder.

All the riders I talked to up there spoke highly of the GS but in reading a few sites and following the IB I became a bit of concerned in the number of rear wheel failures that have been experienced both in the LT and the GS.

Are the parts the same? Anything posted in the past on this problem - I am new to this list.

Hi Bill,

I just sold my LT and purchased a new 1150 GS. I would not be overly concerned about the rear end failures other than to be aware that others have had them. It seems like a major issue because of the number of posts on various boards, but who knows, it might be small potatoes compared with the total number of LT & GS motorcycles out there and who knows all of the various circumstances. I had 77K on my LT and no drove failure issues and I know of several other LT riders who have fairly high mileage without a failure. It did not affect my decision to sell my LT or to buy a GS, just to be on the safe side an extended warranty might not be a bad idea.

Bill, www.bmwgs.com GSPOT has some photos of the new 1200GS's and discussion about the new differential on the bike. I was impressed by the new tank design for wind protection. JON

I've already decided that if I win the lottery (go stupid tax go!), I'll wait for the new GS instead of making the small upgrade to a new GS. :)

The new one should be *very* nice.

thanks for your thoughts guys. Is there a release date yet for the 1200 GS?
