In Denver today. Went to BMW dealer. Asked for jumper for high alt. They said my 93 K1100lt doesn't need it.

Anyone confirm this?

What's a "jumper"?

In New York lingo -- a person who stands on the top of tall buildings or bridges and draws crowds.

In BMW lingo - another word for the code plug located in the relay fuse box.
The code unit is a plug in and modifies/selects the electronic engine control computer program. As an example, BMW offers a plug for the usage of substandard third world fuel. The plug looks fancy but is nothing more than jumpers connecting pins. The placement of these jumpers determines the profile.

Thanks. Learn something new every day. It seems that new terms and acronyms are popping up every few months.

To answer the original question - Motronic ECU bikes (K1100, K1200, R1100, etc) do not require the altitude plug (jumper). LJetronic ECU equipped bikes (K75 and K100) have a built in circuit in the wiring harness for an altitude plug - which when plugged in leans out the mixture by about 10%. Inserted at altitudes above 5,000 feet MSL the mixture adjustment provides better idle and throttle response and keeps the mixture closer to optimal. Left in below 5000 feet (especially down at 1,000 feet or sea level) the lean mixture can burn exhaust valves and damage pistons.

The altitude plug is nothing more than a wire loop in a plastic cylinder that plugs into the harness - closing the circuit. Some folks have installed a switch to close the circuit when needed - which greatly simplifies switching from high to low altitudes. It also makes leaving the switch on easier to forget - and allows for "busy fingers" to fiddle with one more thing on your bike. On my K75 I had the switch installed but in an easy to reach but out of sight location up under the side cover.

Or, in my case, a person who asks a question and gets and answer and then "JUMPS" to another post and asks it again because he had brain fade. :banghead

OTOH - I can still laugh at myself. :brad :brad :brad

Thanks Paul,

Another person who learns something everyday. My knowledge of K bikes just moved above zero.

Good afternoon Paul, would this also apply to an R bike such as a GS (2004)? Thanks,
Andy

Could someone post a picture of the jumper in and out of the controller? Still learning what all the parts are...

Good luck on your request. I asked for pretty much the same thing and got a non answer in return. :dunno

Life is full of distractions but the baby is sleeping and I needed to take the dirty diapers out to the trash so I took the camera along.

Here is a shot of the plug ziptied to the frame tube near the fuse box. You may need to remove the left side panel to see it.

The jumper plug I keep in the tool kit. I never wired a jumper switch

The jumper is idiot proof and will only go into the plug one way.

Hope that helps.
