Has anyone replaced the the latching mechanism on a case and if so how is it done?

The inner portion and latches are all held in place with rivets.
You can get the bmw metric rivets at the dealer an put them in with your own rivet gun. Rivet guns are sold at any hardware store. If you don't want to buy the bmw rivets I'm sure you can find some of a similar size at home depot.

Does the plastic piece that protects the inner workings from the elements come off? It seems as though it must in order to rivet it to the case.

Are you talking about the locks?
if so.. you rivet them from inside the case to the lock on the outside.

Burnszilla,
I'm trying to rig my lock/latch box to another inner case as well. You mention the BMW part number above (46542316692). I found that part number at A&S web site and it lists that as a set of rivets for $5.10, but it says they are for K1200LT and some other bikes. Do you know for a fact that these rivets work on the case latch for the 1100/1150 series bags?
I don't want to pay the $31 for the rivet kit they have listed for those bags just for a lousy 7 rivets. :help

Go here and learn how to fiche:

Thanks. I already went to the parts fiche places and can only locate the $31 rivet kit for these bags. I've checked at two different hardware stores and all I can find off the shelf are the regular open-end pop rivets.
What's needed are the closed-end blind pop rivets and seem to be available only at special web merchants and of course the dealerships. I was just hoping you had used these specified by that part number for this purpose.
It's hard to tell from the pics and diagrams just what size they are and if they would work. I'm stopping by the dealership this week sometime and will have them pull some to look at. I guess there's just not much call for replacing the latch mechanism in the bags.
I will gladly post the results of my "rivet quest" upon successful completion of my mission. :wave

I used Arrow brand 3/16 inch diameter, 1/2 inch grip length (long) rivets on mine (part # RLA3/16IP). I already had them lying around but you can find them at Lowes. I enlarged the holes to 3/16 inch, put a light coat of RTV on the rivets before i shot them and filled the center hole with RTV after. They haven't leaked yet.

I used 5/32" rivets and they worked fine. The blind ones can be gotten from www.mcmastercarr.com Go there and search for pop rivets, or blind rivets. They havd a large sellection and usually ship the next day.
