I'm a life long Airhead, but I never try to pass up a good deal. I'm looking at a 2003 R1150R with less than 1000 miles on it. It was owned by a soldier that has spent a lot of time deployed elseswere. What did the 03 model come standard with? Heated grips? I know there may be issued related to the bike sitting around for this length of time, is there anything in particular to look at with this bike? Thanks

I bought an 03 new. Standard equipment was heated grips and one accessory outlet. ABS was an option. If the bike has ABS you should have all the systems bled, new fuel, fresh oil and gear oil. Most of the 03 models came with a conventional battery. You should probably replace that with the gel model. Otherwise, ride it easy for a few miles, freshen the fluids again, then enjoy it.

I agree with Tom. I just bought an 02 with only 1800 mi. The gut I bought it from said it had a new battery. Turned out it was a year old and crapped out the first week of ownership. Left me stranded. New battery a must. Great peace of mind.

Bigrider,

Here's an important tidbit if you are just entering the used Roadster market: 2002 and 2003 R1150R bikes have the obsolete nasty old ignition system that no one wants, while 2004 and 2005 have the wonderful modern two-sparkplug ignition system. Use this as a bargaining point for that low-miles 2003.

I second that; get a deal on the '03, or go for a twin sparker. I have an '02 (RS) as well.

Hey Fred! I love my '03 with the lone spark plug. She may be obsolete, but she runs fine for me. Lord I hope the Black Dominatrix doesn't read your post. She'd be devastated...calling her "nasty". :nono

I had an 03 R, if the deal is good, go for it! The twin spark is nice, but the old stand by single is ok too. Keep the valves adjusted and the TB's synced and the surge( worse on the single spark) is a non issue.
Great bike BTW, wish I had kept mine to commute on.

MrsK had an 02 and it surged not a bit. What a fine motorcycle that was.

What I like about my single sparker is there are plenty of used perfect valve covers around! I always keep a pair handy; use your imagination as to why.

I was tempted to swap my '02 50,000-miler for a very low mileage '04, but then thought the better of it. After all, I know my bike's foibles!

Whenever I see a photo like that (especially black), I smile dreamily and think, "Oooooh! Parts!"

Who is the Black Dominatrix?
Can I place an order?
Does she accept MC or visa?
Finally, what kind of riding gear do we need for this one?

I had a Roadster that I sold not too long ago. I loved that bike. When I was riding it for the last time, on the way to turn her over, it was bittersweet. She went everywhere...cross country, mountains, desert...took everything I threw at her and never ONCE surged or did anything bad for the 30,000 miles I put on her. The last of the metal gas tanks... :violin
