I have a 2002 K1200 RS and have experienced a shift problem going from 2nd to 3rd SOMETIMES. Last time was when I was cruising on the highway for a hundred miles or so, stopped, gassed up and then took off. I tried shifting from 2nd to 3rd but no go. I had to shift to neutral, 2nd and back and forth until it went in to 3rd. This is the 3 time this has happened and the bike has about 7000 miles on it (just bought it). Any suggestions as to what is causing this problem and what I can do about it?

Spline maybe??? You can ask for varying opinions on www.k-bikes.com/forums ...otherwise, for mis-shifting I would head to a mechanic to check it out for sure.

Thanks Andy. I have also posted on K-bikes (good to know about that site too).

I've read on other sites that cleaning and//or replacing the foam bushing on the shift linkage usually clears up the shifting problems. Some just require minor adjustments.
If I can find a link to the procedure I'll post it here.

Usually the dry clutch spline manifests as a problem down shifting 3rd-2nd/ 2nd-1st.
But could be.

To wrap this one up - changed the transmission oil, put synthetic in and it's shifting just fine. Sometimes simple = best.
