hello mike.
I am changing the oil for my firsttime on my 99 K1200. Old oil is out, the three allen screws are off the oil filet cover door and now I have no way to get the filter and the washer back on. The filter screws on OK by itself, but I am sure I need to get the crushwasher in there somehow. Do you know how to go about that??

Hi, JimmyT,
I assume you already have the info, but in case you don't, here it is. You drained the oil by removing the drain plug. THAT is where the crush washer goes. You removed the three bolts and removed the oil filter cover, then unscrewed the oil filter. Make sure the old filter has a rubber gasket. If not, it's still in the engine. (I've never had it happen on a BMW filter, but I have on my Honda Accord filter.) Fill the new filter with oil, cover the rubber gasket with a film of oil (I use my fingertip) and screw the filter into the engine. The correct torque is hand tight plus 1/2 to 3/4 turn. I remove the "O" ring from the filter cover, then wash and dry the cover and "O" ring and reinstall the "O" ring. Then I reinstall the filter cover. I snug up the bolts, not using a torque wrench. I get them tight, but the correct torque on these small bolts is NOT "two grunts and a fart"! I then refill the engine with about 3 1/2 qt. of oil and go for a ride. When I return, I check the level and top up the oil to the dot at the center of the sight glass or maybe a bit higher. BTW, I use Mobil 1 15w50 synthetic oil and BMW filters. I use a new crush ring and MAY renew the "O" ring every few years, especially if it looks flat or maybe has cracks in it. I hope this helps.
