Looking for information on changing oil and filter on f650 dakar 2001. Service book is no help. Do I need to purchase a repair manual or is there a site out there that can help me?
This (http://faq.f650.com/FAQs/Oil_Change_FAQ.htm) may answer some of your question and the chaingang forum may be able to answer the rest. I am not clear what is being asked.

It is sooo simple, just asking a tad bit of advice will get you through the first one. Filter is on the right, behind cylinder. Two or three bolts with o ring. My F650'99 had drain in front frame tube and a tiny amount from crankcase plug. Refilling is another story. You must initial fill the frame tube on older models, run engine and recheck for topoff. Your 2001 may be different here. Fill it 'till you read full on stick, run it breifly and recheck....Over filling is no no. Randy748/13233

I know overfilling is always thought to be bad, but.
Seeing that it is a dry sump engine -where only what the engine needs is pulled from the oil tank up above... Is it really THAT bad to put a bit too much in the reserve tank?
PUMPPEDDLER- where in upstate are you located?
Just did my first oil change on my '05 GS. Took my time and all went very well.
After doing it once you'll think its the easiest thing to do, other than having to remove body panels and gaurds...

Hot oil expands, as its circulating through the crank-case and reservior (Tank/Frame) it will get higher. It has to have someplace to go that can handle it, because it's a closed space that's all.
A bit too much (like as in 20-30cc bit too much) should not cause a problem but like 100cc too much will cause untold problems.
