Nuclear Plant Incident Puts Emergency Workers on Alert

Emergency workers in Kewaunee and Manitowoc counties were on alert for about four hours Wednesday night after technicians at the nuclear power plant in Kewaunee had trouble with one of the reactors.

Manitowoc County Emergency Management officials say technicians were shutting down the reactor to fix a water leak around 9 p.m. when they tripped some of the breakers.

Workers had to shut down the reactor manually to repair the water pump.

Technicians monitored the reactor and its temperature, and it's protocol to put Kewaunee and Manitowoc county emergency agencies on standby along with the Emergency Operations Center in Madison.

"We were ready to go. No one had to be shown what to do, nothing had to be explained. They know what their role is. I'm very proud of the team we have in place," Nancy Crowley, emergency management director, said.

Emergency management said air quality checks confirmed no radioactivity was released and residents shouldn't worry.
