I think these may be going bad on my K bike...are there any indicators if they go south?

Noise, symtoms, etc?

Does anyone know of article on how to fix these? I read Don Eilenberger's article but I was hoping for something with photos or a video :lurk

Thanks!

There really is no "fix", just remove and replace. The whole process is really-really simple. (1) Remove whatever bits need to be gone to allow the alternator to be pulled off, on a K75 that means the computer, the tray and the battery, (2) unplug the electrical connector on the back of the alternator, (3) loosen and remove the three bolts that hold the alt. in place, (4) remove alt to the rear. At this point the rubber thingies might just fall out or you may have to pull them out by hand. In any case, remove the old ones and add new ones. Repeat steps (4) thru (1). No special or even unusual tools are required although long reach hex keys make removing the allen head bolts on the alternator easier.

The only awkward thing about the whole process is that nothing really holds the rubber thingies in place and reseating the alt. and not having one or more of the r.t.'s fall out can take some trial and error. SOme people gob some grease or glue on them to make the job a bit quicker.

I had mine go at ABOUT 35000 AND IT SOUNDED LIKE MY CRANK WAS GOING BAD - IT REALLY HAD ME WORRIED! BUT THEN i THOUGHT TO CHECK MY ALT OUT AND THIS IS WHAT I FOUND! THANK GOD MY INSIDE MALE SIDE WAS STRONGER THEN THE CUP ON THE ALT! easy fix and i was back ready again for another 35ooo!!

Mines all fixed....and it wasn't as bad as yours!

Now THAT'S really bad!

Putting grease on the back of the rubber dampers and where the dampers accept the dog drive fins saved my butt - it went together in about 10 minutes of jockeying.

Runs like a charm.

If I can stick my finger in to the fan blades and the only "give" feels to be the flex of rubber are the cusions okay? K100RT with 108k on it. HaroldS
