Guys,
I need your help. Picked up a 1986 K100LT that was crashed by it's last owner. Bike runs fine but I've got a problem opening the gas cap. I was able to open it once to put in some fresh gas but it's not even budging now and I'm worried about breaking off the key. I've sprayed in lots of liquid wrench into the lock but it's still not budging. Any suggestions on how to get that lock loosened up?

Jiggle (?!) it a little; it'll open.

No slight intended here: older locks are Really Twitchy as their tumblers are gummed/slow. That you got it once, means it takes Patience, but must be gotten again.

Once a gas cap is open, the tumbler set can be pulled, cleaned, and reassembled for proper use. That the original key is valid; cleaning will restore original function.

At the open cap point, the tumbler set can also be reground for another key to be accepted (I'm a fan of an unground key blank: my next ignition spare).

Until you trick it open again, you face the biggest frustration of a K owner.

My locksmith is really picky on what he sprays into automotive tumblers. He uses this stuff called Miracle Mist, which I think is a silicone spray. He doesn't want any WD - 40 going in; says it's too sticky. The lock I have that always gums up is the tailgate lock on my station wagon. When the winter salt spray pulls in there from the Kamm effect, it gets really stiff. The Miracle Mist works like a charm to free it up.
