Hello all,

I am trying to see here what the amount of riders under 40yrs exist here in the MOA. I am looking to write a article on younger riders and to see what brought them into BMW motorcycle riding or riding in general. If your son or daughter does ride but is not a part of the forum the info would still be great...

Thanks
Outback UFO

As for me... it was when i was 24 and i joked about motorcycling around Australia and ended up riding straight across the entire continent solo..

now at 29, though the you older guys are still a great time with the riding and adventurers that are done... i have only run into two other younger (non-squid) riders under 30 in the last three years.

One a Honda (finishing the trans-Americas) and one who was on a R100GS (riding with his dad to AK), both in Dawson City, YT

Let's see, last time I checked I am under 40... will be for a few more years. Started riding when I was 30.

In my mind I'm 22, in my body I'm 35, I missed your high cut-off by eight-years. Sometimes my body feels like it 65 and getting older :banghead

I hope to see the results though, it's a 'Wonderful Life' on two-wheels. :brad

Chronologically I'm 44, physically I've got the max heart rate of your average 32-year old, and mentally I'm about 13-14 ish...

Oh yeah, starting riding two-wheeled lawnmower-engined contraptions at age 11; first Beemer in 2001 at age 39.

I started riding beemers when I was 23. That was back in 76 though.

I started riding at 26, and am now 27... just under a year riding, now.

I used to think that riding was probably fun, but too dangerous, then one day I decided I wanted to start riding. I didn't want a crotch-rocket, and I didn't really like any of the far-East cruisers. The HD's were OVERPRICED and not really my style, and then I found BMW's. I really tried for a mid-80's K-bike, but in the end, I'm VERY happy with my 78 R80/7. I enjoy working on old cars, so maintaining the bike is just a little extra enjoyment.

Probably heading to my first rally on may 5th (Sturgis, MI BMW mini-rally), although I'm a little afraid it will be me at 27, and then a bunch of people in their 40's and 50's. :-) We'll see! :D

I don't think AGE has anything to do with riding a BMW.
It's how quick you wise up and mature.
There are a lot of fools that still ride HD's. :brad
Just kidding, but honestly, it's not the age, it's the preference.

My son Kevin got his MOA membership at 15, but he started riding on a learners permit at 14. On last years mileage contest he was just under 11,000 miles. He turned 16 on March 2 2006. We looked into getting a regular motorcycle license but the insurance is too high, so he only rides on a learners permit. So far he had a 1982 Honda CM200 to start on, then a F650CS and now a R1100S.

His MOA is 116389

Hey there,

I'm 31. Got my first BMW when I was 29. A 2004 R1100S. The family though, has had some type of BMW ride over the years. The line up has included K's, GS's, Slash (pick a number), and R's. My cousins and I are all within a few years of each other and they all got BMW's in their mid 20's. I was told if I got anything else, I'd be disowned.
The bike is going in the shop for some maintenance and to have a few things put on. Getting it ready to do a few long rides this summer.

I'm 32, been riding since I can remember, probably about 5 or so an a Suzuki 50cc Trail Hopper. My Dad was a BMW dealer back in the 60s so I've always been around them. Got my first BMW only 5 years ago, I'm up to 3 now.

Hey guys! I just wanted to let you young whipper snappers know that I'm working on getting the under 30 types together at Vermont so we can meet each other in person! I'm interested in finding folks to write for "My Turn" in the Owner's News, as well as encouraging more involvement in the MOA.

And just so you know, I got my motorcycle license today! :deal
You'd better all look out if I ever actually get a bike! :dunno

What's up Kevin? :nyah

Just turned 21 a month ago. Started riding two years and almost 50,000 miles ago. Bought my first BMW because I wanted a sport touring bike that a college student could afford and I found a project K bike that fit that description. I got it running/restored it over the winter and have been riding it ever since...

you should look into having him on a older BMW 80s R bike... as a occational rider to lower the insurance... my insurer told me when i was 25 that BMWs get insured normally lower than other makes since staticially BMW riders are less likely to get in an accident... how true this is i dont know... but at 25 i had a new 1150gs single male with one speeding ticket still on my DI and had insurance of only $360 per year full coverage.

There is a big thing with the MSF course cert that goes over with the insurance people...

hope it helps

I'm 39 for a few more days.

40 is coming fast

Cinco de Mayo will be 40 for me 05/05/66

Yikes!

I will be spending my 40th on the Dragon

On the Boxer Cup if the weather is good and I am spending that day solo

In the Z3 Coupe if the weather is nasty and/or the SO can get away for a couple of days.

Give a wave to the old guy if you happen to be there the same day.

Anyone know if the Deals Gap Campground sells Depends? I'm feeling old.

Insurance for Kevin.

I looked into insurance for a 16 year old rider with several companies. The first thing you find is they ask how many years of riding experience you have. Their soft wear is designed to not let them enter any time before the 16th birthday. At 16 you must start with a rating of zero experience, thus very high risk. Even if he has the MSF course.

If you have a loan on the bike, which we did on the F650CS, then we needed full coverage. For a 16 year old the quote was $4,000 per year. Just liability on any motorcycle runs the same as a car in my area, $1,200 per year. As long as Kevin is on a learner’s permit, which restricts him to riding with someone over 21 on another bike, the insurance for full coverage is $220 per year on a 01 R1100S. Of course this has turned into so much of a father and son thing the extra money for him to ride alone would not add a lot of value.

The final decision for paying that much money to put a “kid” on a newer motorcycle is safety. If he over cooks a corner, or a driver pulls out on him, or the roads are rain slick, his highest chance of survival is on modern tires, with modern suspension and antilock breaks. I first looked at some older bikes for the money issue, then thought about it. Finally I decided the risk is enough; if we were going to do this he needs the safest, best equipment I could get. :bikes

thats too bad they count 16 as zero for insurance... but on the brightside of things is you get to do a lot of riding with him since he has to be with you on the learners permit...

With mine i got to drop more by having full medical coverage so my insurer did not attach the medical coverage for as a driver.. just for the passingers and third party... though i had to make sure my med ins did not have any clause that would exclude me if i was in a accident while on the cycle... but that was for me... a 16 year old might be another story...

You're asleep, but others worry that you're dead. :gerg

Your back goes out more than you do.

You enjoy hearing about other people's operations.

You send money to PBS and MOA

The end of your tie doesn't come anywhere near the top of your pants.

Your ears are hairier than your head.

You think a Goldwing is a sexy ride

You get at least two retirement checks and check the market hourly

You talk about "good grass" and you're referring to someone's lawn.

You get into a heated argument about pension plans. :nyah

Well I'm a rompin' stopin' 63 year old hunk of female satisfaction with a little dimentia thrown in. :laugh Now if I could only remember what I did with my blasted motorcycle keys. :dunno Oh, been attempting to ride beemers for about 30 fun filled years. Easy solution to lost keys :gerg

Have several duplicate keys made.

Are you still having problem finding keys?

If yes - have more keys made.

Sooner or later you will reach a point of statis where the number of keys lost will equal the number of keys found.
