Hi guys,
I need help figuring out if a '78 R100RS I am looking at is original. The guy selling it is the original owner. My delimma is that it has an S fairing on it. The owner says it is an RS that came from the factory with the S fairing. Did they do that? The rear seat cowling does have the RS emblem on it. He says that it is one of 70 made this way? It is also supposed to be 70 hp from the factory.
I would have assumed that it was an R100S motorsports. Can anyone shed some light on what exactly this bike is. Thanks

Plug in the VIN HERE (http://www.bmw-z1.com/VIN/VINdecode-e.cgi) and see what BMW says about the bike.

Also, what about the engine emblem on the side of the engine? Does it say R100RS or R100S? Does the VIN on the engine match the VIN on the fairing/frame?

I've got the opposite scenario, but I'm not fooling anyone. I've got a "true" RS, as well as an "S" in RS clothing. But the "S" has the R100S on the engine as well as the R100S on the seat cowling.

Does the production date equal the year model? (Thanks for the link Flash.) I entered the vin numbers on two R100Rs' I had thought were 1984 models, both have titles that stated 1984, alas the vin register has one produced 09/83 and the other 12/83. So are they 83s' or 84s'?

Don't you remember the Blues Brothers?

"New Oldsmobiles are in early this year."

Bought my '84 RS in December, 1983. It was produced in August 1983, giving it plenty of time to take a boat ride. By your thinking true 1984s wouldn't have been available until, say March 1984, and that's obviously not the way the business works.

'83s and '84s are pretty much identical anyway.

Motor vehicle department registration is pretty much irrelevant.

I guess, despite production year, they would be considered 84 models. Not, as Ikcris, points out, that it matters much for 83 and 84 models.

My '77 RS was "made" in November, 1976.

And, according to the web site, my '77 S was "made" in September, 1976.
