I wonder how many of them rode Beemers...

Funny. I kind of said the same thing last night to my father when he was explaining the big Canadian news story to me on the phone. I said, "We can assume they weren't BMW motorcyclists."

Interesting there is a pretty active “club” of Banditos in North West Washington. I see them all the time in my area. I guess someone has to make up the other 1%...

I work with an "Outlaw" every day . This morning, I had no choice but to listen to the propoganda about how there were no "Angels", but plenty of S.W.A.T. at the swap meet in Belvedere, IL last weekend. I am constantly amazed how these people thrive on this bull****. Nothing about Nothing. Reminds me of the 2nd grade, except with knives and guns. Not that I have a problem with guns, I always tuck a Derringer in my boot when I might be around these cats.

If ya been ridin' awhile ya can probably skip this post.....on the other hand there's a lot of newbies out there who don't "really" know what the terms OUTLAW and ONE PERCENT mean. Here's how it is..... :brow

Basically it started with the AMA back in the late 1940's when a lot of veterans were returning home from WW2 and looking for something to do. Something that would get the adrenaline pumping like they were used to. A lot of them started riding motorcycles. Clubs were formed, races and other events were held and the AMA (American Motorcycle Association} was the controlling body that would sanction different clubs and events. Some of these clubs were, shall we say, a little rowdier than others and raced a little harder and partied a little harder and eventually the conservative AMA declared these clubs "OUTLAWED" from participating in AMA sanctioned events. The AMA publicly stated that these "OUTLAWED" clubs and individuals were only about 1% of the motorcycling community and the other 99% were, like the AMA, conservative, family type, middle Americans. The clubs that had been "OUTLAWED" hadn't really done anything bad, they just didn't fit the image the AMA was promoting. In the end, the "OUTLAWED" clubs decided they were just as proud of who they were as the AMA crowd, so in typical non-conforming defiance, they adopted the term 1%' er and proudly became "OUTLAWS"!.....

Now...this doesn't change anything......but history is always interesting.......

...and FYI........some 1 % "ers DO ride Beemers.... ;)

Some years back the BMWRA mag. OTL front cover featured a nice close up of a San Francisco Hells Angel on a K1200LT! He was with other Hells Angels, all in full colors, with a kid on the back and both were wearing normal 3/4 helmets. The crack up caption underneath was: "The end of motorcycling as we know it?"

Those bandidos like to frequent the bar about 2 blocks from my house on Everett, Ave near the tressle (The lighthouse). They don't even hear me until I'm past the bar and only then I think they see me as most are probably deaf from their bikes.

One of my best biker friends is an Angle and we joked about me putting a sticker on the door of the bar about supporting your local HA's and Nomads - :doh (He said he'd talk to the guys and see if I'd get an honorary membership :laugh :bolt

I have been by the Lighthouse a few times. It just does not strike me as the kind of place I want to hang out. From what I have heard the WA Hells Angels are not that "outlaw" anymore, mostly regular guys that party a little harder than most.

They have a pretty tight code of honor, that is to say you mess with one you mess with all of them. That is usually how members get into trouble.

Just what I have heard.

Exactly, but that code of honor works both ways, they don't pick on somebody just for kicks. I've found them to be over friendly if you treat them decent. One very good thing the organized outlaws have done is put a stop to those wannabe outlaw clubs from forming, now there's where you found real AH's!

I have met and been around quite a few from "outlaw" clubs, many from a few of the older national clubs. Any I have meet were polite and would carry on conversations with me unlike some of the wannabes I have come across. There are some hog members that eat breakfast where the wife and I do who want even speak to us even though we have seen them many times and live here in the same town. To me the "outlaw" clubs are the true "bikers",me I'm a motorcyclist.

I was a Harley rider, HOG life member and ABATE member long before I bought a BMW so I think I have some insight here. The Harley rider of today faces overwhelming peer pressure to dress a certain way and in a more subtle way, talk, stand, etc. Even among ourselves certain of us will chuckle over how a professional person will put on the Harley garb and be completely transformed in bearing and manner. I call the voice change "the ABATE growl". In reality most are big pussycats just trying to have fun. So I think you can see why there would be instant embarrassment upon meeting an imposing (for all the obvious reasons) BMW rider.

B2BWYLD, Thanks for the offer, and in a way it's kinda spooky.
I've been dreaming of a bike trip out there to visit my son in San Fransisco and it's getting to the point of, "now or never". Also I'd like to do it with my 45 year old daughter that rides. I've mentioned the trip to her in the past but never seriously....... I'll let you know on that offer, yes, I'll let you know on that.

Sonny Barger of Hell's Angel fame rides a BMW now. I've talked to him.

I recall Sonny barger saying that if the bikes had been available, the Hell's Angels would all have ridden K100s and ST1100s.

I also recall an interview with Barger in which he said something about having an R90 in his garage, and that he liked it but didn't ride it much around his buddies, and there was an implication of embarrassment in how he said it. He also said once that if the Angels had half a brain cell between the bunch of them, they would have switched to BMW years ago.
