The BMW MOA is the largest independent single-marque motorcycle organization in the world. In slightly over 30 years it has grown from just an idea into a family of approximately 37,000 members. Our annual International Rally is the largest BMW motorcycle event in the world and our monthly magazine, the BMW Owners News, the premier BMW motorcycle publication.
These accomplishments, as impressive as they are, do not really describe what makes the BMW MOA so special. Rather, it's that virtually all the effort to achieve them was, and continues to be, done by volunteers. Aside from a small paid Headquarters staff of six, and an even smaller independent contractor crew who publish the Owners News, virtually everything else that makes the association tick is done by volunteer members – hundreds of them.
Everyone from the Board of Directors, to the International Rally Chair and Rally Committee Chairs, to every rally worker, and even those who submit articles to the Owners News or support the web site are volunteers. They often spend many, many hours of personal time in thankless tasks to provide services others take for granted. Time taken from personal pursuits, family, and (most importantly) riding. All done for nothing more than the satisfaction of a job well done. Many others just extend an offer of help when a fellow rider is in need.
It is this volunteer spirit which makes the BMW MOA a special organization, has sustained it and helps it continue to grow. Therefore, to recognize these efforts, the Board of Directors has established three classes of service award:
