Arkansas
Ozark Mountains
From Mark Reilly, the state of Arkansas has a great state park system --
campsites, cabins and lodges. The roads are the best for hundreds of miles. The fall
foliage equals Vermont. Call 1-800-NATURAL and ask for a Travel Planner Kit.
Queen Wilhelmena State Park
Contributed by Rick Holbert, MOA# 52848. Queen Wilhelmina State Park outside of Mena Ark.
on the Ark./Okla. border. 3877 Hwy. 88 West, Mena, AR 71953, 501-394-2863. The park has
tent campsites, or for those who prefer a bed and ammenities, there is a rather nice lodge
and resturant on site. Bikes are welcome. The park is located on the Talimena skyline
drive which winds it's way for 68 miles starting in Ark. and ending in Okla. Word of
caution!! If you fix your own grub, place your makin's away from camp at night (hanging in
tree) as this is bear country. I've seen them along the Skyline Drive and sometimes they
have come into the campgrounds, but this is a rare case. Very good roads abound all around
the area and the country side is a sight to see. Bring a camera. Oh, almost forgot. The
campsite has a laundry facility so clean clothes does not mean a trip into Mena.
