Great Gear: Reviews and Suggestions
Theres got to be one thing you simply cannot do without. Why dont you tell us about your most useful piece of camping gear?
Below and to the right are contributions received so far. Also, be sure to check out the Tips page, since there are a few pieces of gear advice there, too.
Moss Parawing
Bring your own shade, space to place gear, cook and sit, all while protected from the elements. This product is a great adjunct to your tent, and even a nice replacement for it on pleasant evenings. http://www.mosstents.com/
Moss Tents
From Irene Boettcher, President, BMWRSM (Southern Maine): May I recommend the formerly made in Maine Moss Tents? We survived ALL THREE NIGHTS camping out of doors at RA in Quebec rally (the INFAMOUS "RAIN" Quebec) along with several Nova Scotia fellows also in Moss Tents. High ground and state of the art protection paid off big time. I just bought my second Moss, the original is still in service as our lightweight overnight solo tent, the second is a three-person for more stationary use such as at rallies. http://www.mosstents.com/
Try a tarp instead of a tent
In lieu of a tent, or in addition to, get down to your favorite KMart, Walmart, or Army/Navy store and buy a big, plastic tarp, says Dan Galena or Erie, PA. They come in all sizes, are inexpensive (maybe $20), and extremely durable and waterproof. Buy a half-dozen bungee cords and you can use the cords to tie the tarp off to trees, poles, vehicles, or even your bikes ! It makes for a quick shelter from the rain and regardless of tarp size, they fold up into nothing and are easily carried.
Quest Tents
Contributed by MartyR906@aol.com, he recently discovered a tent that is very well suited to two wheel travel. The brand name is Quest and they feature a minimum of loose parts. They are a three season tent with a center hub that is attached all of the frame poles so that the tent and poles stay all in one piece. Marty says this is very convenient if you've ever set up a tent after dark . Th price is about on par with other brands, about $150 for a three man, which fits two good sized men fit very nicely. The tent packs down to a neat 7 lb. package about the size of a pie plate and 14 inches long. A vestibule is available for an additional price and some models can be zipped together to form your very own ghetto "tentament" housing complex.
From a Quest Press Release: Quest tents boast some of the best weight-to-space ratios with patented technologies such as Sportiva Hubs for easy set-up, maximizing all usable space and providing added strength to the pole structure. Other high performance items include the "Super Fly," tent fly for easy set up and adjustment that eliminates the need for grommets and buckles. Tents also feature details such as extensive use of durable mesh for superior ventilation, internal storage pockets for small essentials and double entries in many designs to easily enter and exit the tent without stepping on one another.
Horseback gear outfitter
Gray Buckley, the Top o' the Rockies Rally Master, suggest you take a look a gear from some people who have supported their rally for the past several years. Their focus is on horse back riding, but their gear is very well suited for motorcyclists. It is a small firm based in western Colorado. http://www.havesaddlewilltravel.com/
